I have a 700r4 in my 4runner running a chevy 4.3

Just got it running, so havent driven it much, but will be doing lots of testing this weekend. Check out my build, just click on the signature banner at the bottom of my post

What motor are you running. If you're running a yota motor, i'd stay with the 5spd. Autos rob a lot of power and when you don't start out with much it will be a dog. If you go with a 4.3 or bigger, then it would work fine. I stuck with the 5spd. I just like manuals more, especially on the down hills, but it's pretty much personal preferance at that point.

Spend your money on dual ultimate transfer cases and you won't have any reason to need an automatic.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

Having 700r4 now, it's had to think of not having it.   However they aren't bulletproof and that's allways in my head.  If I had a toy motor I would stick with the 5 spd.
Diggin a hole with plastic
90 ext cab toy, short 40 Iroks, detroit and diamond, mco8-r10 duals with twin stick, 4.7 gears and 30 spline Longs/hub gears-studs

i like manuals, they're probably all i'd ever run since i have more fun driving them.  then again, you need the gears or you'll be stalling, burning the clutch and bombing over some stuff that you could idle over over with dual cases.  that's kind of where autos rule.

i'm gonna probably save up for dual cases over the winter, best of both worlds :beerchug:

Anything lower than 100:1 crawl with an automatic and you won't be able to stop the truck without putting it into neutral, so I have heard.
