name this part?

i broke my first birf.  pulled everthing apart and in the axle tube i found this thing i dont know what it is?  i'm guessing it some part of the diff but i really have no idea any help would be greatly appreciated :beer:  :beer:

I know because I just rebuilt my whole front end.  You can buy a axle rebuild kit from marlin for like 89 bucks.  Trust me thats a screaming deal because I went my local parts store just to buy the trunion bearling and they were 20 bucks a piece plus tax.  Marlins kit had all for bearings (it doesn't have the wheel bearing) and all of the seals and dust covers etc. 


Now that I'm looking at teh picture it doesn't have that part but like I said I'll look at my diagram when I get home and try and post it up.

Advanced Autoparts has dirt cheap bearings and seals for Toyotas.

I went to Pepboys, totalled almost $200.  Then went to Advanced and spent $20.

i think its just an oil slinger,im pretty sure ive thrown mine away!from memory they fit in the axle housing close to the diff centre,on either side.

Did that come from inside the axle tube or from inside the knuckle?  From the looks of it thats the little tin piece that goes insid ethe axle tube to keep gear oil from entering the tubes.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Yup that is what I was thinking. Keeps the oil from sloshing down the tube toward the axle seal.

I didn't get a chance to send this earlier and I wasn't able to see if that was thr part or not.  If somebody thinks its somewhere else in the axle let me know I"ll get a diagram of that too.

It's not a seal, the seals don't have any holes in them. :headscratch:

All I see is a bearing and an axle seal, no baffles.

Its an outer seal Protector   it presses from the inside of the axle out towards the outer seal  housing   it keeps any metal tossed from a broken diff from eating the outer seal The holes are to let the gear oil drain back into the axle tube

man you guys are great..... i was sort of freaking thinking i was going to have to replace diff parts  thanks so much for all your help...... while i have your attention is there anything else i might need to do when fixing the broken birf.....  i've gone through the birf housing with a magnet and i'm going to drain the fluid and refill ....... the housing took a beating internally i dont think i realized i broke the birf till i had crawled through some more stuff.  i was just going to get all the sharp edges filed down....
if there is anything i'm missing feel free i would hate to kill a ring gear or pinion..... thanks again :beer:  :beer:  :beer:  :beer:  :beer:  :beer:

Just pull the 3rd and make sure there are no chunks in there.

Or glue your birf back together and see if it is missing any pieces. :greengrin:

looks like an oil seal, once, i was on the con and lost the seals and a birf, so i took bearing grease and filled the third and the knuckles withit, i think its refered to as dryboxing, but it worked for two trips :thumbs:

It don' look very different from the wheel seal on my f-250  :gap:

im assuming that this is not a vital part.... considering i can't even find it on toyota's breakdown diagram.....  does this need to be replaced or are alot of you guys just chucking them (like the lockdown washer on the ring gear).........   how the hell would i get in there to replace it anyways......

Just toss it  is what most guys told me  Mine was a dog to get to stay in  every time i slid the axle in it came off on to the axle  I finally put two small tack welds on it  not sure if it is still in place or sliding back and forth on the axle . Mine came off when broke a birf too.   Lynn
