well this is pretty good to hear.  i just got a 91 4runner with a 3.0 in it, given to me for free with 145K on it.  i see the only people talkin chit about em is the ones who've never owned em. i actually talked chit about em but this thing seems to run pretty strong, and a fully loaded 4 door 4runner with 145K on it isn't a bad deal as a gift.  sorry for the thread jack.
in the projects nooga, anything goes

Man you guys are scaring me!  I just bought a 95 runner for my 16 year old with the 3.0.  It is slow and gets crappy MPG but ok for her I guess, Just hope I'm not in for head gasket probs. It's 2wd 3.0V6 AT 140K and new 31" BFG AT's.

furrballs95

all i can say is that the 3.0 is a good motor in its own special way i have had 3 of them i have a 91 excab and the first 3.0 threw a rod bearing the second had the dreadfull head gasket problem. and its still sitting to this day i contemplated many times to just put the 22r in it but its going to get either a jdm 3.0 that my buddy got strait from japan when the recall was still in effect on the head gasket prob. but i also have a 95 p/u that has the 3.0 i had it for about 3 months and u guessed it the head gaskets went just my luck. but after about 1600$ it runs great and i have come to find that if you run 93 octane in them they get a little bit better gas milage but thats just my opinion. but all in all the 3.0 is a decent motor when its running right but life span i dont really know cause all the ones that i have had have given up on me after about 5 months so.

DON'T DO IT!!

I'll talk :pokinit: all day long about this monstrosity, since I've just put in, and am still trying to make work, engine #3 this year.   My  truck has spent more time in the driveway this year than on the road, and its my DD!  The 3.0 is underpowered, overweight, and yes, they are allergic to headgaskets.  They also have    carbureted tendencies, and you can hydrolock them with oil if you tip'em.  Been there, almost done that

Ok, I have to jump in on this one.  I own a 94 Runner 3vze 5 speed 4x4.  204K miles.  60 miles a day.  20 mpg no mater how you drive it.  Won't get any worse, won't get any better.  It has always had the timing belt changed when needed, it has always had the fluids and filters changed when needed.  It had the head gaskets done in 1998.  And whoever said that the engine is noisy?  Sometimes I try to start the engine after it is running because it is nearly silent!  THIS ENGINE IS QUIET!  Sure, it could stand more hp.  But it is very reliable, gets preaty good fuel milage for a 4x4, and very quiet.  What more could you ask for in a daily driver of 60 miles a day?????  Works for me.  Besides, how much power do you really need in 4 low anyhow.  Crawling down the trail on a sunny day with a Bud and listning to the outdoors....that is....since the engine is so quiet!!!!!!!!!!!

we have a 89 4runner with the 3.0 and hated it until we got rid of the clutch fan for an electric one and it got a little better when we installed the snorkle went from 12mpg to 17/18mpg and it could climb hills BUT my lightly modified 2.7 will smoke it all day long in fact it's so bad that I can't put all the blame on the weight dif (both haveing same gears and tires)and my 2.7 will stay dead even with the stock 3.4 So I say go for it just make a couple of changes like the oil pan conversion the electric fan & anything else that helps with air flow weather it be intake or exhaust we have found that the more these 3.0's breathe the better they perform (like anything else) and as far as it being illegal everything and anything we do these days is illeagal  and as far as emmisions go it's all BS my 78 chevy pick up has better emmisions than my dad's 96 f-250 when it was new(I have been runnig emmisions tests for 15yrs and it's all about the $$ for the states that have them)

Head gasket recall is still in effect until Jan 06.  If your local Toyota dealer tells you different, they are filling you full of it!  I just checked mine and they were replaced in 98.  Then, the service tech told me that if it hadn't already been done, then more than likely they would have ordered me a new long block from Toyota of Japan because they were so strict on the engine block pitting and not being able to machine it to factory spec.???

I'd contact Toyota and see if they may reimburse you for it.

While I dont' think that the 3.0 is a bad motor (though not as good as typical Toyota) I'd probably avoid putting it in a Tacoma.  All the mods add up to a lot of work and not a lot of return.  Find another 2.7 and sell the 3.0 to pay for it (or at least some of it).  I don't hate the 3.0s.  I actually like the one in my 89 4Runner.  It's at the 200,000 mark, doesn't leak a drop of oil, never had the head gasket fail (knock on wood), and gets 18-20 mpg thanks to an intake / header & exhaust.  Despite liking the motor, I wouldn't rebuild it.  I'd put in a 3.4 if/when it does go South.  People say a lot of bad things about the 3.0s because a lot of people have had problems with it.  It is a sterotype but sterotypes come about for a reason (usually).

No kidding.  I never thought it was a bad thing, didn't mind mine, until the heads blew :smack: after redoing them twice, and figuring out it was the block, I got another motor.  Then it blew.  So after going through 2 3.0s in about 8 months, I'm not too happy with them.

I have endured the 3.O 3VZE for about 20 years. I can find nothing good to say about it. Poorly designed, poor performance, constantly troublesome. The exaust crossover pipe was known cause of hellish head gasket failures. The list goes on and on. Save yourselves heartache, money and blood. Listen to the "long timers" on here. Don't Do It!
