Seem to be a few muffler threads popping up, maybe we need to cover this with everone's experiences with different type.
From a minute of research, there are three main types:
1.  Sound cancellation (like flowmaster and corsa)

Then there is Sound absorbtion, like the glasspack, etc.

Then there is the diffusion muffler (like the super turbos)

So lets hear it (pun intended).  What do you use, how loud or quiet is it?
Put it all here that way the next hundred times we can just reference back to the thread...enjoy!

I loove me my Flowmasters.  I have 2 40 series on my f-250 and they're pretty loud.  I love it though, it idles smoothly and isn't very loud but when I get on it it's beastly  :beerchug:

I run a flowmaster 40 series also :yesnod:
A little to loud for me but not to bad

On my 4.7L Dakota I'm running Hookers. Only loud when it's in the floor.

On my 22RE Toyota I'm running the stock muffler, loose collector bolts, holes in pipe before & after cat, holes in muffler, exhaust tip looks brand new. :gap: It's a little loud.

Cheesemaker

My old 78 el camino had dual glasspacks, nice mellow tone until you got on it, and it would sing!
85 nissan 720 I stick to the plain cheap turbo's, nice and quiet.

I'm old school, loud mufflers sound cool on V8's.  I just replaced mine a month ago, for two weeks I ran around with a blown out muffler, it cool, but very loud and obnoxious.  I realized I was using more gas than normal!  And with the gas prices today!   :yikes:

I have to speak my opinion on this one.  You should never ever ever ever group Corsa and Flowmaster into the same category, maybe not even the same thread.  This isn't meant to knock the Flowmaster product, but there is no comparison in quality or design.

I had a 3 inch Corsa catback on my 2000 SS Camaro and the muffler was literally a 3 inch diameter stainless pipe with a 1/2 to 3/4 inch gap in the pipe at the front of the muffler and a 3/4 inch diameter hole at the end, that is the only air flow disturbances in the system.  They have tested the system to about 14 rwhp and when cruising it was quieter than stock, but a full throttle, it was actually louder than most of my friends cars running everything from Glasspacks to Flowmaster.  One friend had a car that could literally be heard from 6 blocks away (he got pulled over several times for sound violations) and he commented on the volume of my exhaust when I passed his slow a$$ Mustang running wide open.  Corsa technology originated in the NASA world and is similar to the sound cancellation technology used in the Bose headphones.  It is tuned for individual cars to reduce the interior resonant frequencies (vibrations).

Flowmaster is one of the loudest mufflers on the road and their interior noise is about the same as outside the car.  Some people like the sound, I'm not a big fan, and they do seem to help with hp a bit.  To me they all sound the same v6 or v8 since they actually build in the flowmaster sound.  Similar to how Chevy designed the Corvette mufflers for a while to make a certain "corvette" sound.

I could go on for days on this one.

Sorry BlackDiamond, wasnt lookinf to knock Corsa with affiliation, I know they make bad ass mufflers, they are just the same style of noise reduction...

I decided to design my own, whatcha think?

I like the supertrapp design, I have heard they are a bit raspy though...don't know how quiet you can get them to be.

How thick is your muffler material and what are you using to weld it?  You might try oxy-acetylene welding it as opposed to MIG.  I'm just assuming you don't happen to have a TIG lying around otherwise I'd use that.  I think the oxy welder would give better visibilty and therefore bead control in order to get full penetration.  If using MIG, I'd make sure the weld prep/joint fit was exceptional and I wouldn't grind any of it off afterwards.

How do you plan on welding the baffles into the muffler...one side or both?  :headscratch:  Keep us posted.

For the record, I'm a lightweight and simply purchase my mufflers from the shop installing it.  Actually, I'm running (when it'll start) an IMCO brand muffler, similar to the Flowmaster design.  Fairly rowdy sound in town but not to bad at idle and highway speeds.
If it never breaks, people can only speculate how much it was overbuilt.

Hyena

I have a $30 Turbo Muffler from Riebes.  Sound is kinda deep, but no ware neer the deepness of a flowmaster 40.  I like it a lot.  Would sound better with a few exhausts leaks fixed.  But i built my own exhaust from the cat back.  It only cost me $50 for the muffler, addapter, 2 straight pieces of pipe and 2 bent pieces, plus a rubber mount.  The muffler and pipe are both 2 1/4 in and out.

CTENG in KS

I used 16 gauge for the base of the muffler, I have been welding just the bottom of the baffles to the 16g.  The baffles are 20g, I am starting to get the hang of the stitch welding.  The baffles are all done, I am finishing the welds along the bottom of each side panel.  I will take a pic before I put the top on so you can see.  I will make a little disclosure though, the welds are hard core ugly and many got very boogery to fill where I blew through the metal.  Oh well, it will still work!

I hope you are successful with your experiment, but you could very easily create more noise than you quiet.  The only reason the Corsa works with so little internally is because they only cancel three resonant frequencies (at cruising speeds) by reflecting the sound waves (not flow) back 180 degrees out of phase.  This is why their mufflers are specially tuned for each specific application and you can't use them in your own custom, non-stock, systems.  My Camaro actually had a few rpm bands that were very loud in the car because the muffler was outside its designed range.

I'm still not sure how flowmaster, that redirects the air flow and sound waves, is anything like a Corsa muffler that cancels sound by reflecting sound waves only.  Flowmaster muffler are some of the loudest on the market in my opinion.

It looked like your design was attempting to mimic the Corsa system, but I a skeptical that you will be able to actually tune the muffler to really provide any sound cancellation of resonant frequencies.  I hope you are happy with your end product!

Actually, the design had nothing to do with the Corsa...there is no cancellation, only redirection, we will see, if it doesn't work out I will just do something different.

lilbuddy

Ive got a 2 1/4 Flowmaster 40 series on my 22r. Has a header and highflow cat too. It sounds awesome at idle. Then up till about 3800 and from 3800-4200 it sounds like poo. But from 4200-5500 it sounds pretty good. Yes, my motor hates me when I am in mud and have it fullly mashed to the floor at 5200 RPM. Mine sounds the best at around 2000-2500 RPM

My brother has a 40 series on his 95 jeep YJ. IT is loud as hell. I love it. You can hear it for a block (Yes it pisses me and im sure all of my neighbors off when he goes to work at 515am!) It sounds really good at higher RPM too. Sounds the best at about 2500
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

yeah......I think that it is about time for me to replace my muffler bearings, I'm gonna do that before I get a new muffler

That was a joke

Muffler bearings seem to go out at around 75,000 miles.  When they go out it is like a bomb exploding.  The whole cab comes flying off the frame.  You should check the torque on the bearing nuts about every 6 months or so.  locktite helps with them from coming loose too.  And the heat from the exhaust will kill the bearings.  Try routingthe exhaust away from the muffler bearings so it bypasses the muffler alltogether.  sounds killer like that too.

Well, I went and got some more done, it is pretty damn ugly, but the welds are sealing up tight, so it will be an exersize in function over form.  Hehe, there are so many boogers.  ah well.   :hammer:
