New to the Solid Axle World(Now with pics)

Hey there, i just got my first solid axle toyota  :yesnod: .  It is an 86 4runner, with the 22-rte(turbo) and auto tranny  :crazy:  and it has been sasd with an 82 truck axle.  It has 5inch lift in the front and chevy springs with lift blocks and dual shackles in the rear and a 2in body lift.  It is currently running on 33's with stock gears but it will soon have 35's and 5:29s  :biggthumpup: .  Here are some pics  :greengrin:

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

:bull crap: Nice save there 86turboyota, we will be watching for those pic's.  :welcome: I had an 86 turbo 4runner and the auto, even with the IFS it worked well offroad. The only drawback was on really steep climbs I'd run out of engine when the trans would suck up all the hp. Loved that thing though, had a lot of fun with that truck. :thumbs:

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

oh please fix that tail pipe...oh just cut it off. And them shocks, / \ is the way to go. Nice to have a SAS for a first yota. I get to do it the hard way. Happy wheelin

thanks for the warm welcome.

I went ahead and cut off the tail pipe where the bend starts going down...about a foot after the muffler.  It wont be there for long anyway... ill be putting flowmasters on it with 2" pipe  :biggthumpup:

dude :welcome:   sweet ride but it needs a few tweeks


go 2 1/2 inch pipe and start from the turbo :yesnod:  trust me you'll free up 30HP in that alone


it looks like your front springs are almost hitting the frame,  what brand springs are those??   if they hit they are likely to do the S bend




yep,  loose those blocks as soon as you can afford some Marlin rear springs,, blocks are bad  if you spit a block your in deep :pokinit:

I was planning to 2" or bigger... i wasnt sure of the biggest pipe i could run without problems... but if i can run 2.5" then i will  :thumbs:   the front springs are allpro 5" springs.... as far as i can tell they are no where near hitting the frame  :eek: .  Are the marlin springs going to flex as well as the chevys?  I was thinking about maybe using AALs and longer shackles.. :dunno: .  I cant weld all that well yet so i probably will have to have a shop weld the new spring perches and hangers if i switch to marlins... so thats more money i dont have  :conf: .  O well .. we'll see what happens when i sell my other yota, then ill know how much money i have to work with.

are your chevies from a 4wd or 2wd,  the 2wd S10 springs i have appear to have WAY more arch than those do

the pic from the side of your truck ,  above your engine pic ,  looks like the shackles on your front springs are about to hit the frame,  not your 'springs'

my shackles are almost vertical when i dont have my winch and bumper on

Did all of the turbos come with that digital dash?
I have never seen a turbo toyota around here in KY.

All the 4Runners that I have seen had them, it was a dress package, had special door trim and turbo seats that were different than the others. I think pickups came with either the standard trim or the special turbo trim. I took my turbo seats out so I wouldn't distroy them wheelin' it then put them back when I sold it. You might be surprised to find that there are a few around since the only emblem that tells you it is one is small and on the tail-gate. It's only one of those embossed crommie stickers that can be easily removed...... or stolen by some putz that wants a turbo sticker.

Not trying to hijack this thread but could you swap in a turbo digital dash into a non turbo truck ???

 :shakehead: Sorry, my brother who also had the turbo tryed to put an analog in and it wouldn't work right, speedo worked but the other gauges just sat there dead. I think the gas gauge did work though.

to tell you the truth im not sure if the springs are from a 2wd or 4wd... the frame is notched.. well kinda ground down more than nothched.. but ya the front shackles wont touch the frame unless the end of the spring itself touches the frame... not sure if thats a good thing or not... o well.. i guess ill find out.

everyone loves those guages lol... id kinda rather put some normal analog guages from VDO or something in so i can see what the actual temp and pounds of boost are and all that stuff... but its kinda cool.
