22r Compression
« on: Jun 05, 2005, 04:30:52 PM »
hey all i just recieved a 1983 toyota pick-up that the owner wants built, the first thing on the list is to fix the engine problem, all cylinders except #1 have 175# of compression where-as #1 has 30# now this doesn't seem right to me that all of them would be fine except one. the engine has massive blow-by enough to force oil out the valve cover breather. could the head gasket blow between a oil passage and #1 cylinder? i tried the age old trick of putting oil in the cylinder then checking compression and it went up, indicating bad rings or bad valves. valve lash is all within spec. i would rather just do a head gasket than another engine swap. thanks in advance.

yep, sounds like either the rings are shot on the #1 cylinder or you have some bad valve problems.  either way, you're probably going to need to tear it down.

tear it down and see if the gasket is shot...you'll have to do it either way, so you might as well start there.

started to pull the head off at 10:30 so i could take it to school the next day, and right before i took the timing gear off i decided to align the timing marks, i started to rotate the engine and i turned until i saw the silver link and the dot on the gear and noticed they it was one tooth off. i looked down at the oil pump and looked at that mark and it was a TDC so could this cause low compression on just one cylinder? is there any reason for the timing to be changed one tooth, ie: milled head? thanks in advance, would love to have this truck going in a couple weeks. gotta keep the customers happy

It could cause a compression issue,,however 1 tooth i do't think would brop it that bad.

has the engine been sitting for a while?line up the timing marks,,and drop a little oil into the low cyl's through the spark plug hole..Cyl's sometimes get whats caused a washed cyl..its where all the oil is washed out of the rings and will get blowby..some oil is needed in the rings for compression..I have run across this several times before with new and old motors that have not run or run in a while..
Forgiveness is between them and god..

i already dumped a little oil in there yes it has been sitting for  a while how much oil is usually needed to make the rings happy?

about the timing chain:  the bright links are only for installation purposes.  after the engine is turned they don't align for a certain number of rotations, since the camshaft spins slower than the crank.

yes i know this, but they never align even after the 4 required rotations, it is one tooth off, but don't worry pulled the engine last night at 10:30
