Lifting Chevy rears?
« on: May 31, 2005, 07:36:20 PM »
Ok, so I'm putting on my rears-up-front spring pack soon. I'm guessing they will give me some lift...maybe. :dunno:

So how should I level out the rear, I dont want to use blocks.

Current rear set-up is Chevy 3 leaf + overload, low profile hanger (spring eye 1/8" from chassis) and Johnny Joint shackles.

blocks, shackles, or lowering the rear shackle mount.  I would prefer the shackles or lowering the rear mount.

My first set were super low and I ran a 7" eye to eye shackle AND a 4" block. Then I got a set out of an '01 Chevy, still 63" but 2 leaf with an overload. With my same 7" shackle, I only needed a 3/4" block to level it.

It would depend on how much lift you do in the front i.e. how many extra leafs you will add.  I originally had mine at about 2.5 to 3 inch lift in the front and I didn't need any blocks and I recall my shackles were 6 inch.  :dunno:

I have blocks.  It allows me to keep the flexible factory springs.  I use traction arms and have zero axle wrap, yet it remains super flexy.

I put my over loads back on(only the front half, I cut the rear half off) so I don't know if I still have any rape.

blocks are fine if you don;t mind axle wrap,,or the possability of them snapping in half or spitting out..sure,,a wrap bar will take out the wrap,,but it won't fix the other two problems..there are keepers you an build to help keep the blocks from spitting out,,but as long as you stay on top of the u-bolts and keep them tight they work..I'd look for other options though..like lowering you shackle mount over using a block..

Before every run I bouble check all my bolts, just for that reason. I've seen my freinds have loose u bolts on the trail, not a good thing. And they get all  :tantrum:  :maddest:  :yikes:  :sneeze:  :wall: :censored:

weld on a keeper..its a plate welded to the block and the u-bolts go through the plate..thes keeps the block from spitting out..even if the u-bolts come loose the block stay put..

try longer shackles a plus to longer shackles is it will also help your pinion angle. and if you put blocks on you will get axle wrap which sucks you start twisting springs but chevys will put up with a lot good luck  :driving:

I'm running 2 inch block on Mazda 2wd rear leaf packs with 7 or so inch shackles eye to eye and it seems to work out great.  I don't have any wrap that I've ever noticed  even when in double low.  I also run a buggy rears and I put a lot of stress on thouse packs.  They are only 3 leaf packs as well.

Its not the best shot but it kinda shows you.  It will drop quite a bit more I just couldn't find a good enough place to flex it out

OH yeah and just to get a kinda better concept thats a 37 inch tire.

it looks as though you may be able to get more travel out of that setup if in board your shocks, or get longer ones? :beerchug:
