I just got back from Maui and it is TOYOTA HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!  I have never seen so many SAS rigs in one place at one time.  There were tons of the 84 up style Japanese bed type trucks everywhere.  Lots of 4runners too.  My questions-why do you guys have such excessive lift with such small tires?  Why are your wheels offset and/or spaced out so far?  I saw several trucks with 10+ inches of lift, and 33" tires.  Maybe thats just the style over there?  Where do you guys get your parts?

Is this what you are talking about? From the looks, it's pretty common there.

Here's a link to the website I got them from lots of pics most are exactly like you said. There may be some law out there limiting you to 33's? :dunno:

I checked them again and they preview just fine but for some reason they won't post up beyond that. Oh well there is a link at the bottom of my post that is good you can see them all there.

Here's thier email address I'm at work and can't ask them to get over to marlincrawler.com and let us know what's up. Ask them to join and post up in this thread. They do look a little funny with 33's and ladder access only lifts.

Most of the trucks built in Hawaii aren't really built to be functional, it's more for looks.  There aren't a whole lot of places that you can legally go 4Wheeling in Hawaii.  Most of the land is privately owned so you'd need permission or you'd be tresspassing or it's owned by the government (fed or state) so you'd need some sort of permit.  If you look on that site there are VERY FEW pics of the trucks being driven offroad and you'll also notice almost none of them have sliders (because there's no reason).

I noticed the same thing but was never able to talk to anyone over there about it, I just assumed it had to do with trail conditions

i just got back from kauai on Tuesday and its the same thing there. when i asked a guy last time his respone was it was just a Hawaiian style thing and flash floods. for some of the guys its functional to get in and out of work. the road systems on the smaller islands are not large freeways they are simple two lane roads and the land scape isn't exactly perfect so flash flooding in some areas is pretty frequent. but if you look close some of those trucks are really rigged together with front s blocks homemade body lifts. thats not to say that some are done properly like any where you go but Toyota is definitely represented in numbers and has been forever over there. i was in and out of pearl harbor in 89 and the Toyota's even then where in masses being on an island not many big trucks. i also was taking count since i bought a 05 powerstroke for a tow rig and only seen 2 diesels privately owned in the 11 days i was there.

lowgeared

Now that you mention it, I saw very few diesels over there.  I did see a lot of trucks with a solid front axle swapped in---or can you still get these from other countries with a solid axle???
