Hey fellow 80-83 toyota owners. In the past i was known as PoisonCherokee.. I had a 87 Cherokee with a 10" lift and it burnt :rivers:.. Before then i owned 1, 81 toyota, and 2, 82 toyotas.. Now i got another toyota.... I am a big fan of the early year toyota's. Only other toyota id like to own would be the mid 80"s solid axle extra cab..

What is it about the early toyotas you other owners like? Post pics of yours also with your mods. Im currently in the process of building mine.. And im looking for more information and idea's

So far its been a breeze getting it built. Some current mods that im in the process will be added to the list when totaly finished..

New Paint (white)
Lifted (toyota rears up front, f250's rear)
Shackles
Bead locks
Custom Diff Guards
Custom Push and Pull (waitin on my IFS box for cross over)
Locked Rear
Good 22R with 138K miles (22re swap later this summer)
Custom Exhaust
ProComps Front, 9000's rear
33" SSRS (need 35"s)
w56 crany
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Im thinking of more mods, Ive taking the truck wheeling 3 times in the 2 Months ive owned it and got some decent cab and door damage on the passanger side from a tree.

Man, I can't believe you're dissin on the guys with 79s, that's just cold!  I've always been a fan of this style truck, and one of the biggest reasons is just how good it looks.  I've yet to see a better looking design from toyota for the trucks.  I like the clearance too, it's pretty funny when you park next to a ranger, s-10, nissan or almost any other small 4by and stand back, their clearance doesn't even come close.  One of the only things I don't like about my 80 longbed is that it's a longbed.  All the things I wanna do to it I might shelf till I can find a decent shortbed to start with,  I just can't see stretchin this wheelbase anymore.  If/when I do improvements I'll post em up.
RIP KYOTA

My club's president owned mine and it was his DD, even with that it had a lot of upgrades that could not be passed up. 5 speed swap, 3 inch lift, limited slip diffs, 22r/20r combo, yada, yada, yada. I couldn't get my $2,500.00 out fast enough to give it to him. It's always nice to know the history of what your buying.

I have a extra first gen 82 short bed frame thats RUST free.. Its sitting at a friends house... You can have it. It sucks to have a truck go to waist cause of a bad frame..

I had an 82 short bed, flat bed, dana44 front 12bolt rear, on 35" with chevy suspension, 350 small block, sm465, np205.. Truck was decent and still being built but the frame was so bad it was like paper in the back frame rails.. So i sold it.

Not really a toy, more a chev with the sweetniss of a toyota look.

kyle_22r

i like my long wheelbase when it comes to climbing hills -- not as great for turning radius but its hilling ability makes up for it.  it'll be even better once i bob the bed or flatbed it.

and i'm like the guys above, i didnt pick the truck, it found me.  i'd been looking for months and it appeared in the paper -- i found it at about noon.  most of the time if there was a 4x4 toyota it would be sold the first day by 8:30 or so, and i happened to be the first guy who called on it!  $800 got me the truck with a canopy, 31" buckshots and a spare set of old uniroyals and a siezed up 20R in the back.

i noticed today on the way home a nice little blue '79-81 truck that i always see has gone up for sale.  i wonder how much it'd run...i'd love to have a pair of 1st gens

No mods yet but have got alot of good ideas from all of you guys. All I have to say is if its good enough for the Taliban its good enough for me!

The only thing I can say that the 1st gen's are lacking is the leg room.I'm a big ol boy so needless to say I had to get out and stretch alot.Other than that i would take one anyday over a 2nd.

This may be true in stock form but I put in a pair of early Camry seats in my truck and needed to booty fab  some boosters so I could see. I'm 6'2" and the picture shows just how low I sat in the saddle.  The previous owner was real short so he had made these booster brackets that lifted him about 2" but I was hitting the roof with my head so I turned the rear brackets sidways, redrilled them and put them back in. I now have plenty of leg room and head room.

Paid $300 for my 82.
I got it from a salvage yard it supposedly didn't run it had 144,000 miles on it.

A headgasket and carb rebuild and degreasing it is running.
It turns out it's my buddy Dan's old truck he sold it in 1998 to some dude for $3800.
I guess the guy moved and abandoned it was towed to the salvage yard where it sat for over a yard they finally decided to sell it which I just got lucky.

Here's what's on it

Optima Red top 1000 CA battery
rewired battery wires to 2 guage welding wire
4" procomp susupension lift came on the truck.
Bud Built Low profile crossmember
1" Roger Brown Body lift
Widened front axles using IFS hubs
FJ40 vented rotors
IFS front calipers
FJ80 Master cylinder
Extended stainless flex brakelines
5.29 gears
Lockright locker rear
Aussie locker in front
Longfeild cryo treated axles
axles have been martac'ed
1.25" wheel spacers running on back until I get a 86-up IFS rear axle
35x12.50 BFG MT's on 15x8 3.5" BS series 51 rock crawler rims
Tabor Magnum 9000lb winch(Basically a older Warn winch all internals are warn parts)

After about $4500 many stickers later.

New flatbed is almost finished

Still need to install the new sky manufacturing hysteer and rears on front and the chevy springs..
