Hey guys, I could use a bit of help with my '86 22rte 4runner, my first 22r series yota. It failed a pretest yesterday. First thing that surprised me was the timing, with the terminals shorted its at 15 * BTDC, unshorted its about 22* advanced :yikes: So I figure thats my first thing to do is to time it correct. Heres the #s it got:

test ------ rpm --- HC max --- HC measured --- CO max --- CO measured --- NO max --- NO measured

15mph --- 1761 --- 131 ---------- 67 ---------- .87 ---------- 0.00 -------- 1085 ------ 1868(fail)
25mph --- 1727 --- 103 ---------- 52 --- ------1.10 ---------- 0.00 -------- 1120 ------ 1933(fail)

notice the complete lack of CO and the high NO... would the timing so far out of whack cause the high NO?

its got new plugs/wires, i seafoamed it about 500 miles ago, running 87 octane.

it also failed CA's new evap system test so i plan to replace all the hoses in the system.

tia for the help!

details on that  :bull crap: ??

Hows the sea foam work for you?
I usually dump some propynal alcohol (Spelling?) in a fresh tank every few months... cleans the valves and what not nicely..

How old is the cat?

its a new test they just started doing on the 1st of Jan, pressure tests the entire evap system, if it doesn't hold x pressure for x time you fail

seafoam worked great, suck it into the throttle body and it cleans the intake tract/combustion chamber of carbon, also put it in the gas to clean the injectors

unsure of the cat's age, its prob original as well as the o2 sensor...

i plan on changing the o2 just to be sure. something is making it run lean, very lean ~15.7 a/f ratio

NOx goes up with advanced timing.    Back off the timing to 2-3 degrees BTDC (spec is 5 BTDC  and you're allowed +- 3)

Id definetly replace the cat.
Sometimes a brand new Nice n hot cat can burn off.. or hold back, alot of nasty stuff.
The o2 sensors are spendy, but well worth it.
Espesially if its running lean like that..
14.7's perfect right?

I think for a 22RE, they are fine if you get the right one.  It was the only one listed in the computer and the item looks identical to the OEM as well.

Other types that plug in near the cat are a whole other story, you're right.  All I know is I passed smog, if barely.  NOx is O2 sensor most likely of if you're running stock exhaust, look for leaks and cracks near the sensor.(also cat, but O2 is usually much cheaper and you're not far off.

Whenever Feinstein and Boxer leave office.  They hate diesels and old cars with a passion.

P.S. The real reason they sued the EPA for stricter limits was because they want to keep the Mercedes bluetec and other similar lean burning diesels out of California.  It doesn't matter to them if you could suck off of the pipe and get cleaner air than by opening the window - they are on a mission to get rid of every last one.

Thankfully the EPA kicked them in the shins.

Doubtfull, they're already up to years that started to have a decent amount of smog control crap.

my 22re is completely rebuilt and i didn't pass smog because of my o2 sensor i from a pick and pull. so it is worth spending 100 bucks for a brand new one.

You retard for high NOx.

HC & CO are the opposite, so I think you advance a little

well i tried to get my runner 3.4 smogged and blew over 200 points on my NO at 15mph. so i sprayed a half can of STP choke and carb cleaner (sensor safe) in the carb and a pint of rubbing alchol in the tank and knock off my air cleaner. 20 min later I passed 293 out 512 at 15mph and 222 out of 765 at 25. im not sure if guy at the 1st place was a complete yahoo or the carb cleaning and alchol was what did it. I was gonna change the oil but after 120 on smog tests I said to hell with it.

smog is just another way to drain money from people....It has a great idea behind it but unlike what everone assumes not all smog comes from cars. I dont see grandpa smogging his tractor every 2 years... Same with laws like the beadlock law... They enforce it for the money

just took my 90 4runner with 3.0 in for smag today and it failed horribly.  i put new ngk plugs in it yesterday, new cap/rotor/wires, 91 octane chevron, and 1 bottle of rubbing alcohol, cleaned the air filter(k&n), turned the idle up to 1000 rpm, and also retarded the timing 2 deg. Also used a infrared gun today to check the temp before and after the cat and it was almost 100 deg. hotter after the cat, so i'm assuming its working right.  here are the numbers:

                            %CO2    %O2    ( HC----------PPM)  (-----------CO%-----------)
Test          RPM       MEAS    MEAS    MAX    GP    MEAS    MAX    GP    MEAS    Results
Idle           991        11.32    0.5       120    270    2376    1.00    2.50   4.92     GROSS POL
2500 RPM   2683       12.26    0.2       180    330    324     1.00    2.50   3.97     GROSS POL

GP=Gross Polluter Limits
MAX=Max Allowable
MEAS=Amount Measured

any suggestions?  just went to dmv and got a 30 day pass for it.

it is running extremely rich..  Check you efi system..  It is so rich it is causing the Hc to be extremely high..  Does this truck seem like it even runs good?  High hydrocarbons mean you are in a misfire condition when it is that high..

Most EFI toyotas when running correct are close to .00 to .03 on the co% even if you took the cat off :hammerhead:

runs a little rough at idle.  but off idle it runs great.  i still havn't figured out why it runs ruff.  do you think a new cat would even come close to cleaning it up?

no, not running that rich..  You either have a real issue with way too much fuel or a cylinder that needs attention..  Do a compression test before you go to crazy in the troubleshooting ares..  Does it use water at all?

no, the old motor had bad gaskets, just replaced it with one i got off priate from a guy in placerville, supposed to have 110k on it. it was in his 4runner and it was his daily driver.  ran great.  he pulled it out after i paid for it.  doesn't use any water, or oil.  i'm wondering if the old motor with bad gaskets and buring oil could ruin the cat, but if it won't lower the emissions, i don't see the point of changing the cat.  i'll try a comp. test.  thanks for the info.  i'll keep posted.
