Guys, be careful...

I was working away on my front axle one night, late of course, when I pulled a very smooth move. I was trying to pull out my inner seal with no luck, it was being a stubborn b*std. :tantrum: It could have been the fact that I had stripped the axle right down to the housing and there was no weight holding it in place. But whatever the case, I was not using my common sense (being :red_eyes: n all) when I put my hand up to steady the housing so I could get a good tug on the thing, and I finally popped the seal out along with a few veins in my wrist! :hammer:

3 hours later in the hospital and an important lesson learned: Be safe on the trail AND in the shop!!! :thumbs:

My wrists hurt thinking about it!!  Later on you could make up a really cool story about how it happened!  I personally wear my belt buckle to the side because of a surgical scar, but I tell all the chicks, I wear it that ways to keep from scratching my bass guitar, or the fender on my 67 camaro ss, and etc!  I can see it now, "There I was stuck in a tight spot, and I had to reach out to grab a tree to keep my rig from rolling down a 400 foot enbankment!!"  If not scars build character!!  We've all got'em!

Atleast that happen at home, imagine if you were out on the trail and you did that. Miles away from a hospital.  :ack: you'd be screwed. I think it would be a good idea to make sure everyone keeps some kind of first aid kit in your rig just in case. I never thought about it but i sure am going to get one now.

Willy is right, we've all been there, "oh I'll just get this done" or "I want to go try that hill over there.  Yea, I'm by myself, but I can do it".  The next thing you know the stuff hits the fan and you are in trouble.

Rocks hurt good is right KEEP A FIRST AID KIT IN YOUR RIG.  You may never need it but maybe one of your buddies might.

Nice look'in "Zipper" you got there.  Looks like you will be slowing down a little for a while.

Thanks fella's! It'll heal in no time I'm sure. The scar is gonna be pretty cool n all, good stories for sure haha.

It happened pretty quick. I ripped my latex glove off quick and then the blood started pouring down my arm. I clamped it off quick with my other hand. Usually I work alone, but lucky for me there was someone else in the shop, otherwise it'd have been an awkward 20 min drive to the hospital with my arm above my head. I got to take a closer look at it once they had put freezing in my wound (that was prolly the best part of the whole ordeal :-\\ needles in cut mmm). It ripped a good valley about 3/8's - 1/2" at the deepest point, more shallow on the ends. YUMMY.

But, yes for sure, there is a reason everyone says, "safety first". First aid kits are nice, but they aren't as handy as having someone else there with you. I think that's why it's a common rule of thumb: "Don't go wheeling/hiking/fishing/boating/whatever alone." :nonono: I guess the same goes for in the shop. Besides, it's always nice having a sucker *cough* I mean buddy there doing all your work for you. :beerchug:

Havin people around is always the best option, but a first aid kit is essential, but you have to make sure it is a good one.  You cant go buy one from walmart, it wont be well stocked, ya gota make your own. :thumbs:
Here is a start:

Assemble a first aid kit for your home and one for each car.

(20) adhesive bandages, various sizes.
(1) 5" x 9" sterile dressing.
(1) conforming roller gauze bandage.
(2) triangular bandages.
(2) 3 x 3 sterile gauze pads.
(2) 4 x 4 sterile gauze pads.
(1) roll 3" cohesive bandage.
(2) germicidal hand wipes or waterless alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
(6) antiseptic wipes.
(2) pair large medical grade non-latex gloves.
Adhesive tape, 2" width.
Anti-bacterial ointment.
Cold pack.
Scissors (small, personal).
Tweezers.
CPR breathing barrier, such as a face shield.

for vehicles, you would want to add
blanket (non emergency tinfoil)
flares
trauma shears (cut through damn near anything)
razor blades
SAM splint
common medications (Advil, asprin, benadryl)
needle and thread

there is more, thats just off the top of my head

The best way to do it would be to do it both ways.  you can do it pretty cheaply and in a few hours if you do it right.
Buy a first aid kit that lists about what that first list I posted contained.  The more the better to be honest.
Buy a medium sized plastic toolbox, and mark it first aid
now you can find some stuff in your house that you can use, like the meds, and mabye some flares, steal your wifes thread and needle,
Trauma shears are invaluable, I have a set in my toolbox anyway, and they are cheap too, under $5
check the camping aisle in walmart, you can find little plastic bottle to put the meds in, a bag of five for like $3 you can find an emergency blanket there, a pack of candles, etc.


If you want to buy a good readymade kit, you wil pay a lot more than you need to, but you would go to a medical supply place. They have them prepacked for EMTs and Paramedic applications, but then you'll have a lot of stuf you cant use or wont use.

I'llsee if I can find my complete list at home.  I had a list compiled by a wilderness paramedic that he carried, and he  did basically what i said plus a trip to a surplus store, and a sporting goods store.  you can find most of the stuff within a few hours, buy some stuff, and find a lot in your home.

Thanks rockhound, I get the basic concept of a lever. I've removed seals out of my axle before, that's not the difficult part. Sometimes it gets stuck and needs a jarring motion to pop it out. Thats what I was going for, but because the housing was stripped, it was moving all over the place. I put my left hand up to steady the housing and pulled with my right and well... you know the story.

But thats not the point of this thread, I didn't title it "Help! I don't know how to use a seal puller." :shake: This is a reminder to everyone to be safe when working on your rigs. Don't work alone if you can help it, and think twice before putting a tool to use especially a potentially dangerous one.

Nice little wound you got there. Should heal up well. Your Doc did a great job sewing you back together. Just be careful extending your wrist for a while even after the sutures come out, cause you don't want to rip it open.

First aid kits are invaluble, but you also gotta have the training to use some of the stuff. The idea of the needle and thread is interesting. I wouldn't go sewing up yourself or a buddy if you don't know how to suture. Potential for lots-o-complications. I personally keep a full surgical kit I stole from the Navy in my trauma kit, but I certainly wouldn't try and do a complicated wound repair in the field.

The rest of the list looks great, and there are plenty of web sites that carry a fully made kit. www.dyna-med.com is one, and you can google a bunch more.

needle and thread isnt necessarily for wounds.  but you can use stitching or safety pins for anything

one thing that a lot of people dont think about, and works really well, is superglue.  If you get a good gash or cut, pinch the edges together, and put a bead of superglue (nontoxic) on it.  It'll hold the skin together until you can get to a doctor.  I've used it and by the time the superglue wore off, the cut was healed :yupyup:

I didnt even look.  I am going to get my dads copy this weekend.  I just moved, and I have no idea where to even start looking.  I'll try to have it on Monday for all ya'll :thumbs:
