School me on the topic of boomerang shackles
« on: Apr 29, 2005, 06:25:37 PM »
I going to be running rears up front and was thinking of running some boomerang shackles.  Are they nessesary?  I was also planning on running a 2 inch drop hanger.  Can I get away with straight shackles or do I need to fab up some boomerangs?  Also, since the shackles go through the frame and are wider at the top than the bottom, how do I take up the extra width in the bottom without bending the shackles inward?

Thanks  :beerchug:

im running rears up front i have the stock front hanger and im using non boomerang 5.5 in shackels from eye to eye and they dont hit the frame or body mounts and i got kinda cheap on spacers i just used some grade 8 washers for now what i plan on doing is taking a pease of cold roled round stock maybey 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 and cutting it to the lenght neaded then drilling a hole in it big enouph for your bolts but make shure the stock is big enouph that it overlaps the spring bushings a little bit in diamater so the spacer doesnt cut the bushings  :beerchug:

Thanks for the reply yotaboy.  About how much lift did you get out of that combo?  Any pics?  How's the pinon angle and stuff like that?

I put a 2 inch drop hanger and just some 2 inch straight shackles on when i did my rear spring swap.  I actually moved the front spring eye 1 inch back from stock and my shackles nudge the frame a little.  But right when they tap the frame the springs are already flat so it doesn't hurt anything.  So if you put the front spring bolt on the stock location then a straight shackle will work.

Thanks for the reply yotaboy. About how much lift did you get out of that combo? Any pics? How's the pinon angle and stuff like that?

i got about 4 maybey 5 in of lift the lift mostly depends on how you make the spring pack i used the toyota 2wd main leaf then cut down the main leafs from a waggy set then the others are the bottom 5 leafs from the waggys then i added the stock toyota front bottom leaf to the drivers side pack where it fit to compensate for the different spring perch highths the pinon angle is fine the caster (wich is basicly the same measurement) was only .2 or .3 degrees off wich isnt even enouph to make any difference. and if you wanna see some pics look at my build up thread its "this may take a wile build up (79 toy)" i think it might be down to the second page if you want more pics reply here and i will take some more.

oh and if you plan on puting longer springs in the rear and you dont wanna re use your stock shackle hanger and wanna save some :twocents:  you can make your own im using 2x2 .120 wall square tube notched to fit 1 1/2 tubing for the tubing you can use 1 1/2 .188 wall D.O.M. its the perfect inside diameter to fit the stock toy bushings.
is this too much info for ya lol
good luck and happy building :beerchug:

Thanks a bunch yotaboy!  :beerchug:  My plans are very similar to yours.   I've got an IFS box, marlin hy-steer, powersteering stuff, front brake lines, for the front, just need to figure out what I'm going to do for the rear so I can snag the rear springs and make a pack with another set of rears I've got.

Thanks again and I'll probably be posting my buildup thread soon  :turtle:
