Mini case in fj40
« on: Apr 25, 2005, 06:48:40 PM »
I busted my Landcruiser transfercase this weeking at the hammers. I am looking at putting a mini truck dual case setup in the Fj40 but I dont know how they would hold up. I currently have a SBC 350 with a sm465. I am running 37's. The motor is mildly built Vortec. I am concerned on how the mini truck transfercase will hold up with the weight of the vehicle and the V8. Does anyone know how these would hold up. I know I will need to change to a centered rear axle. What do you guys think?

Thanks
CAcy

Wouldn't you need an addapter to make the cruiser tranny and the truck t-case fit?  You could go 23 spline in the yota case, it should hold up.

Funny but I am just starting to build damned near the exact thing as you are.  We are putting a 9" ford in the rear, mini t-case and a mini front axle.  The truck will end up with 38" sx's though.  Id say you'll have no issues at all with the t-case.  I ran my 84 HARD with a th350 a very healthy 350 and a 21 spline mini case.  Just do it you wont be disapointed.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Im in the process (inching along) of doing just about the same thing too. I have a 327 that was hooked up to a turbo 400 with an advanced adapter to the stock LC transfer case. Now Im setting the FJ up with a SM465 to a toybox to a top shift mini transfercase. the toybox serves as the adapter. to make the connection, I gota 10 spline short main shaft for the 465 from Marlin to replace the 32 spline shaft. right now its all in boxes on my workbench. I still need to get the transfer case, im considering a rebuilt one from marlin

Hey WT, hows your project cruiser coming along? Ive got mine rolling now with f and rear mini axles. Im reconsidering the rear end ( mainly due to Axle tube size ) and the ford 9 looks like a good alternative. Is there a good donor vehicle with 6 lug flanges and 4:10 gearing? Also how about track width?

I'm building an SBC/SM420/Mini case FJ40.  I'm planning on running 42's and I think it will hold up.  But I will be upgrading to the rear disconnect when Marlin  gets it done.

How far off are you from getting er together? Which rear axle are you planning to run?

Hard to say.  I have a baby on the way but I'd like to get it done by next summer.  I'm running Dana 60 at both ends.

PS don't let WHITE TRASH steer you wrong on the disk break conv.

A wheelin' buddy up in Washington had a FJ40 with a 5.0 Mustang GT, T-18 mated to a Toyota Pickup t-case. He beat on that thing with reckless abandonment, and the only problem was one day he was pulling wheelies out on the street, and after a couple of good wheelies, he twisted the output shaft off the t-case. I am not sure, but I think he just replaced the shaft and ran it. I was impressed.

Check out his adapter at the following link:

Seems long.  The ToyBox is only 1.2" thick.  Props to you friend doing the machine work on his own though.
