Death to my PC
« on: Apr 25, 2005, 03:27:05 PM »
Hey guys,

My computer died over the weekend so I have ordered new parts (motherboard, processor, ram, video card) and they won't be here until Friday or next Monday..

So I am here on my dad's laptop to let ya know that I won't be online much at all this week until I can get my system back online.

Also, I have 10 or 12 new applicants to add to the Round Up Page, but the information is in my computer so I cant get to it until I rebuild it (because I dont want to pull out my harddrive), so no updates on that for about a week.

Welp that's about all I came here to say. I had a blast at the jamboree and I've got lots of pictures, but you wont get to see them for another week :tease:

Im on my gf's computer right now :gap: i just cant stay away from the forums :smack:

Well, Ive always been an Intel guy, but I got a AMD 3200+ for nearly $150 less then a comparable P4 3.2 ghz.

I always do my research at http://www.tomshardware.com and I decided to get a MSI K8N Neo2 motherboard, which I felt is one of the best AMD boards, and I got it for just $120! including a free copy of Half Life 2 and FarCry... I was looking at some Asus boards, but they were around $180, plus a 3.2 ghz @800 mhz 775 processor was nearly $70 more than the 3200+ AMD. I also could have gotten the SLI version, but I dont expect to run two video cards as Im not into games as much as I used to be.

So I am gonna try out an AMD system and see how they are.

My current system is a P4 2.0 ghz that I built last spring, and considering that I leave my system on 24/7, I got just over a year out of it, and with all the overclocking I did Im pretty happy with how it worked for me.

Since the newer board is a PCI Express, I have to put my 4200TI GeForce card to sleep and I went with a GeForce 6600GT PCIe card.

Hopefully the parts will come before this weekend so I can build it and be happy :)

I just started up grading also. I bought an asus a8v deluxe, amd 3000, and 1 g of ram. I bought a new video card in december so I wanted to stay with an agp motherboard. After I put everything together I found out that the primary ide slot on the motherboard is bad. I just shipped it back to Asus today. Having the computer down mean no game play for a while. I miss counter strike.

BigMike --> :slap: <-- BigMike

Well,

My parts came in yesterday......................................  But for some crazy reason I completely blew it :smack: and ordered the entirely wrong motherboard. :hammerhead:  :wall:   :sofa: :bricks: :spankbutt:

The Neo2 board I got is a AGP board, not a PCIe board. What the hell was I thinking, I have no idea. Man I gotta lay off the crazy pills.

So I already went back to FedEx and the package is back on its way to Tucker, GA, which from Cali is gonna be 4-5 days.
Then they will give me store credit minus a 15% restocking fee
And then after I get that credit, then I can order the correct board, and still it will take around 5 more days to get it back to me, even if I use 3 day air because last time they took 4 days just to process my order and then they upgraded me to 2nd day air for free which was cool.

So that means that Im still PC-less for possibly 2 more weeks. GEEZE I CANT GO ON LIKE THIS  :rivers:

But the good thing is that I did some more research last night, and had I ordered the correct MSI board, which would have been the MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum, it would have been a poor choice in terms of performance. The price is ok, but now I dont really care any more so Im gonna throw in an extra twenty and get a much better board.

I'm gonna go with a Asus A8N-SLI NForce4, which is a SLI  board....

FYI DO NOT EVER EVER GET A SLI MB

Which I see no problem with. I spoke my buddy here in town and also to the tech of this company, and they have never had any problems with SLI. As long as you use the exact same video cards in both slots it will be just fine. But, in case there is any doubt, this A8N board allows me to disable the SLI feature so everything's gonna be just dandy.

So it looks like Im still screwed for at least 1 1/2 more weeks......

all I have to say is  there realy is no piont in geting a  SLI board  ATM
1. no programs  supports/use SLI
2. becuse it's it's own entity   there are a lot of  no compatible stuff
3. Most belive it's just phase  that will not last long   like the AMD 754 socket
thats what i have hear from tech guys/ read

BUt IF it works great for U cool :)

I hear nothing but good things about the board  U just  got/sent back it  has a good overclocking abilities
The  MSI NEO4 platinum    is the board i would lov to get for my self.  THats one board U would not have to worry about upgrading for a long time.   :twocents:

The  MSI NEO4 platinum    is the board i would lov to get for my self.

It was a toss up between that one and the Asus A8N-SLI NForce4..

Asus A8N-SLI NForce4 (with SLI): $158
MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum (with SLI): $179
MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum (non SLI): $137

But then I checked this comparison over at Tomshardware.com, http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20050103/index.html, and here are some of the benchmark results:

So the Asus board is better than the MSI Diamond (Neo4) board, plus it's ~$20 cheaper.. I do notice that the Neo2 board is doing really well, but that's a AGP board with a different chipset, so I'm not really considering its comparison here.. The Neo4 and the Asus A8N boards are both PCIe boards and I've already got a PCIe card, so I've got one foot in the door

Can't wait to get it in !! I know I'll be happy

Yeah that's my only regret..

My current system is sweet with 1 gig of DDR3200 ram, which, at the time, was top of the line :gap:

...but I was trying to cut some corners and memory is the smallest/eaisiest thing to upgrade later, so I bought some really cheap Corsair mem for under $50 for 512 mb..

Hang on......... OK here it is: CORSAIR VS512MB400 3200 DDR 400 512 MEG $45

So its also 3200 but it was the cheapest 512mb ram they sold.. I just figure I'll replace it with some better ram later this year-

I've been using my dad's laptop but its just not the same :thud: I miss my PC :rivers:

OK GUYS

Earlier today between my two math classes I got my replacement motherboard ordered. I got it for 3 day air, but it may not be shipped until Monday. So I will have to wait for at least next Wed. I think..

FYI I got this one: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=110314&Category_Code=AMD939
Asus A8N-SLI NForce4 SLI Audio/GB-LAN/USB/PCI-E/SATA/DDR/ATX 64 939
$158 + $~14 3-day Air

And I have $120 on store credit, so im out just around $60-

OK It looks like they are going to ship my mb 3rd day air today :crossed: or tomorrow.

So I should get it thursday :crossed: or friday.

It's been a huge mess too. Because I returned the wrong mb, I've got a store credit of $105. My new order is $158 + shipping = $172.25. Well, I've only got $140 in my bank, which is fine, because the difference of my store credit and the order should only be $67.25. But, these morons charged me the full amount of $172.25 and now it looks like my bank is going to charge me $20 for insufficient funds. :maddest:

So I'm on the phone again with the pc company. Apparently, they charge the full price and then they refund the store credit. But I still have not received the store credit refund even.. And this all happened before the weekend. So to make it even worse, I took my gf  to dinner Friday night and when I paid for our $30 dinner, my card declined at the restaurant. It was embarrassing, but I dont really care about those things so much. So my gf had to pay for the dinner :smack: which is pretty lame on my behalf.

When I got home I checked my bank status online and yup, it shows that I've got a total of $142 and a balance of $0.00 So I had to wait until today for the pc company to open up to find out what's going on with my money, and Im on hold again with them right now as I type. I am trying to get the shipping upgraded to a 2nd day or at least have the %15 restocking fee refunded.

Man this is all :bull crap: but I guess that's what I get.. I wanted to save a couple bucks and avoid state tax so I ordered from an out of state company that had a great price but now I'm getting stiffed. I think next time I'll order from somewhere closer to home because all this shipping and return shipping to and from Georgia has been eating up what ever savings I was making by finding the lower price.

The company is a professional company, so its not like I am ordering from Joe's Computers in a hole-in-the wall pc shack, but this is by far the worst internet order experience I've ever had. But you know, it is 100% my fault for ordering the wrong motherboard, which up to that point everything had gone smoothly, but man, having to deal with RMA and return numbers and return shipping and store credit, and billing and yadda yadda yadda has made this one hell of a time-

Al right, well I just got off the phone, and they can't do anything about the %15 restocking fee, but they are going to pay for my $20 bank charge fee so its time for a

Hell yeah she is cool. And get this, I borrowed $60 from her to throw into my account before the hold on my funds were actually charged, and, and............... and get this! The charge went through about an hour after I deposited a bit more $$, so I never went over so the bank never charged me the $20 overdraft fee!! SSWWEEEEEEETT! So I am getting $20 for free, but I thought the restocking charge of %15 was lame because I didnt even open the box and I just wanted to exchange it, so I am gonna take the $20 they are sending me and pretend I never got charged for the restocking. Nice

According to FedEx, my package has left DECATUR, GA and is now in MEMPHIS, TN. Only two more days left
