84 A/C to 86 wireing harness
« on: Apr 25, 2005, 07:37:55 AM »
Hey, I have started the project on my 84 carb. I have an 86 efi donor (complete truck, blown engine, DOA long block for the swap). The 84 has A/C but the 86 did not. Last night I  pulled out the weiring harness fron the 84 and installed the 86 harness. So far everything is plugging in great but the A/C. Is this going to be a nightmare I should just avoid by not trying to use the AC?? Does anyone have some suggestions on a coarse of action that they know of.  Another problem it looks like will be the AC pump belt. After the smog pump is removed would I need to build some kind of idler pulley to simulate the smog pump? Any help would be appreciated.  Z06 :headscratch:

adding your A/C back in is no big deal.  Just pull the AC amplifier wiring and box out of your old 84 parts, and pull the wiring from the old harness that ran the AC clutch.  Your 86 harness should have provisions for the idle up VSV, but your idle up VSV might not work if your AC kit was port installed rather than factory installed.

If your AC was port installed, it will actually be easier to swap everything over...

Also, is that your ZO6 in the picture?

Great! thanx! I was thinking of separating the wires out of the 84 harness but I was concerned I was heading down a bad road. I was also thinking of getting that small harness that connects all the ac stuff to the main harness from Toyota. I figured I would ask you guys first. I will strip out the 84 harness tonight and let you know how it went.
Yes, that is my Z06 in the picture I took the day I got it. Since then I have put corsa exhaust and chrome wheels and some dress up chrome on the back from west coast corvette. I ran a 13.01 at 116mph :driving:  on stock tires. With some drag radials I could get in the 12s easy!

Sweet!  I've got a soft spot for 'vettes of any vingage.  I've got a 63 split window tucked away :eyebrow:   but she doesn't have the original Z06 packaged that was offered that year...

Well, I striped out the AC wires out of the 84 harness. The plug that connects to the main harness has 5 wires in it. The 86 main harness has a plug with 4 wires. In the 84 harness just inside one wire splices onto a black wire that I traced from the ECM (engine control module) clear around hell to the igniter! What the AC needed from the  igniter I have no idea, power? Now, on the other end the efi has its own VSV and it is connected to the engine. The Thermo switch is also connected. All that leaves is the magnetic clutch on the pump. I think I am lost.. Z06 :headscratch:

the wire to the igniter pobably advanced the timing when the AC was on to smooth out idle...
