84 RUNNER ENGINE SWAP
« on: Sep 26, 2002, 11:45:49 PM »
:idea:Hey guys, well for the first time I thought i would try this fourm and see how it goes.I have been to this sight many time before but never thought to check out the fourm and it seems pretty cool..so anyway here is what I have going on and thought someone might have some pro's cons, and good/bad or problems I might run into.I found a killer deal on a 2000 toy tacoma w/ 2.7.I am looking into a engine swap to my 84 4runner.Most of it looks up front and simple.I am wondering about problems swaping the t-cases pros and cons, also probles in wireing..any thoughts and ideas?Ok well befroe you go there  I don't want a v-6,toy,ford,chevy,I just dont want the weight.second I like this 2.7,peppy,small,toyota and it was cheap.I have the whole truck so I have everything (almost) for this swap.I understand there is an adapted for the t-case switch?well anyinfo would be handy. Thanks and keep on crawlin!

First off the t-case output is on the opposite side. What combo are you planning to use?

well I wanted to use my toco 2.7 with trans,an adapter to use my t-case and go duel t-case or just single t-case and gears..It looks like its such a close fit..And while on the subject of this thing and I have not looked into it but does anyone know if the ac pump on a toco can bu used as a air pump?I don't know enough about the toco to know.I know some pumps use oil in the freon for lube so with out freon it will seize..

Should not be that hard of a swap. However I havn't done it. This is from my experiance on the Supra Swap.

Get all the Electrics from the donor truck. The hard part you will run into is your truck is carb, and the new engine is EFI. You will need a fuel pump that will put out enough PSI I would guess around 50-60 is what Toyota uses on there systems, however I could be wrong. And new fuel line to hold the pressure.

DON'T WIRE THE FUEL PUMP DIRECT FROM THE IGNITION! You should put in the Curcuit opening relay and run the fuel pump like the factory Taco had it. More than likely it is off the MAF sensor. This will shut off the fuel pump if the engine stops. You wouldnt want to be in an acident on or off the trai and the fuel keep pumping out if you rupture a line.

I have sen this swap in a 87 4Runner at GSMTR last year. I wish I would have talked more with the guys who did it.

Not sure about your swap or how easy it will be, but it seems like a lot of work for the about the same amount of horsepower (could be a wiring nightmare).  Good luck!  Front Range Offroad  makes an adapter to turn your AC into a air pump check em out on there website, sorry I don't have the web address.

I've done a taco 3.4 into an '86 runner. It wasn't that difficult.
I also had the complete taco for parts.
If you know electronics, you'll be fine.
If you have all the taco, your ready.
Remember the taco exhaust is on the same side you'r runner has
its transfercase and fuel cell. It'll have to cross over somewhere.
I'll help you with questions if i can.

I had plans to run the exhaust ot the side just befor the fuel tank.I think that 2.7 makes way more hp than a 22r,well stock anyway.I thought about v-6 but don't want the weight or hassle.besides,I got EVERYTHING,for the tacoma..I will try to find the ac websigt.that would be a nice option..I am not very familar with the toco wire system.I have done a 4.3 toy swap before and it went well.Hope the same goes here.I will be pulling everything out of the toco when i get back from vacation in tahiti at the end of the month so I will be giving a shout if problems come up..hey thanks alot..I feel a bit better tearing this toco apart.I thought about fixing it and a stright axle, but said f-it,,would rather update my runner with f-i and mo power.... :~~:

Just thought I would ask how your swap is going???
I just picked up a '96 2.7l that I will put into a 1982.  Did you use the W59 and get the adaptor or did you switch to the W56?  I am planning to use the dual case setup.  Anybody know if there is a length problem to fit into a short wheel base.  I am planning to use two modified front drives....
Hope your project is going well.  Have you gotten to the wiring yet?
Good luck...
Roger

I am using the w59..I hope it holds up well..It only had 40,ooo mileson it so I don't think it will be a problem.. :dunno:I am working on the wire harness now.I am trying to get as much of that done first to keep my runner down time down.I used a front half of a frame that was bent to do my mock up of engine and trans.I thought it would be better that way.The juck yard sold it to me for 25 bucks so I felt it was well worth it.This was I will have a kit basicly to install when I am ready..Hey,,got to keep my runner run'n for wheel'n right..
