3 link upper placement
« on: Nov 01, 2023, 04:47:04 PM »
I'm shopping for three link kits and some give you the option for the upper link bracket to be on the diff housing or on the tube. Is it just a matter of where it fits? Or something else? I get why you'd put it on the center section if you had a D60 to keep the tubes from spinning, but what about a 8 or 9" axle? Does the track bar and steering box complicate things? For reference I'm talking about a pass drop 22re truck with crossover high steer and stock axles. Thanks in advance for edumacating me.

Where the links go dictates the characteristics of the how the suspension performs - roll center, anti-squat/dive, instant center, pinion angle change, articulation steer, etc.  It's a whole can of worms that's above my paygrade to understand and explain. And, well, where the links actually fit in the chassis is a lot more constrained in trucks like ours than in purpose-built buggies.

This page explains it all well:
https://www.crawlpedia.com/4_link_suspension.htm

The 3 link calculator linked on that page is a good way to prototype out your particular arrangement.
1981 Pickup - 37s, 5.29s, L52, dual cases 4.7 rear, e-locker front, grizzly rear, 22R stroker
1986 4Runner - 35s, 5.29s, auto, front Detroit, rear trutrac, 4" lift

Yeah I'm trying to grasp the whole concept myself. I understand how link placement and angles can effect things like roll center and anti dive all of that stuff, but I don't think where the upper link is placed would really affect that. Seems more like a space/packaging issue tied up with the drag link and panhard bar.  :dunno:Thanks for the link to the calculator

4wu is good but is stupid expensive now. If you have knowledge, built your own. Or buy just 4wu brackets and piece everything else separately?
