Bending brake lines
« on: Sep 01, 2021, 01:43:31 PM »
Not for for fabbing new ones.

Just adjusting them a little for clearance of the bolts on my new rock sliders.
How much give do they have?  I'm scared to break them.

I only need an inch more between the 2.  For now I used a bicycle inner tube to prevent chafing.

plenty of flexibility.  Just dont 'pinch' when you make the bends- hold with pliers and kink.  bend around an object for a round curve/ prevent kinks

Brake lines have been made of many materials over the years. Only rusty ones have no flexibility. A small bending tool could help you a lot or forcing around a round object as one posted suggested. Beware as you approach 45 degrees. That is where they tend to kink without a tool. Otherwise, you can bend them quite readily. 2 small bends are better than1 and so on. For the record, the new copper nickel alloy lines blow everything else away...even stainless.

When in doubt just replace the whole run from end to end - the new copper nickel line is super easy to work with. You don't want to find out your line is compromised when you max out the line pressure in a panic situation and the pedal goes to the floor.  That being said, I am a patron of the salt states so my experience of brake lines snapping when you just look at them funny may not be universally relevant  :D

Im an electrician by trade.  So plumbing break lines for my truck projects was like building a miniature model.  Bending conduit or brake lines is easy.  For small changes just use your hands.  As you stated DO NOT KINK the line.  Brake line pliers/benders, look them up... You place the tube into a shoe that is the correct radius to bend the line for its diameter and hold the wall of the pipe perpendicular to the crease that will form in the pipe as you bend it.  PM me for more info

If you can't find a bending tool, use 3/8" sockets, variety of bend radii. Try to bend it once, not back and forth.
Assuming its factory line it should be steel and fairly easy going. Copper is worst for work hardening. Copper Nickel, also called Cupro Nickel and Kunifer is top stuff for workability.
Stainless is awesome but has its own individual set of problems

I think it's good now. I bent it a little and see no signs chaffing. I might buy a small bender just to stockpile tools.
