Tube Bending

Pipe is fine for low speed impacts/roll overs. You wouldn't want to use it in a high speed application. There is no crumple or give like DOM or HREW to absorb the impact. I am going to build a pipe exo/bumbers for some dude out pipe  :flamer:. Ive got to order the new die for my bender first.  :twocents:

Opps I didn't mean to post it that way.  I meant to put that I've heard people say that DOM isn't as strong but I don't believe that.  No I know that DOM is stronger and I know that pipe dents.  I've got fender sliders on my 87 runner and they have dented before.  When I get a real bender I'm going to use mainly HREW and DOM

maybe so. but what happens your wheeling and your involved in more than a low speed roll over. why don't any of the rockcrawling series allow you to run pipe? because pipe sucks donley richard.  for that matter any of the racing series out there. the bar minimum is DOM.  :dunno:

if pipe does indeed suck why is it used in structural applications ?  some  towers and such that you see are made from PIPE.  there is also different grades of pipe.   you read to much pirate

i am a welder by trade (pipe in power plants,etc) and dont see a reason not to run it for bumpers and sliders...but that is about it

this topic is getting overwerked..there are plenty of stuff to look at and figure out what is best for your application and $$..but 4 safety use dom please

pipe holds the crap outta pressure, and i usually tig the whole thing out ..as they xray everything we weld

yeah i read to much pirate that must be it :shake: its ok, go ahead and build your next ultimate rig out of pipe, if it makes ya happy; better get some jb weld to insure good welds

not sure if this is true, but isnt is easier to replace damaged sections of d.o.m tubing than h.r.e.w?

the  difference between DOM and HREW or CREW is the way its formed. they are all welded tube, but DOM is drawn over mandrel which knocks the interior weld down smooth as its being formed. So repairing a damaged section would be easier to repair because when you sleeved the existing tube there would be no seem (weld) to interfere with when fitting the sleeve into it.   DOM is stronger but overkill if you ask me, a properly built cage out of HREW or CREW is plenty strong.

1 1/2 x .120 its all in the desine not the material

pipe has a much greater tensile strength, but because of it's carbon content it's more brittle, meaning it won't take impacts as well.  mild steel (hrew, dom) is more ductile because of the lower carbon content.  just as series 300 stainless is used in fabrication, and series 400 stainless is used in cutlery, surgical equipment, etc.  you should be using the material designed for what you are doing, and pipe isn't that. pipe is also harder to weld, you may not think it, but your tube welds are actually stronger is you are using the same process.  this is because pipe has a greater carbon content, so the most likely place for pipe to fail is at any of the seams (or weld deposit zones) ductility has to do with how far out of shape you can get it and still allow it to go back to it's original shape.  an example of this is when bending.  you dont get much spring back bending pipe but there is almost 5* when bending tube.  if you really want to get into details we can get into the ultimate tensil strength of the two which doesn't even matter because when you triangulate something and there are more tubes there it changes that joint completely.  tube is designed for roll cages and things like that, pipe is not. bottom line.  but if you wanna look at it like that,  a defense for pipe cage builders is that toyota trucks were never designed to crawl large boulders.
