Sliders
« on: Nov 21, 2020, 05:39:26 AM »
I guess this question fits in this thread.  Sliders...

I ordered a set for my truck(CBI).  I requested bare metal.  Who here used what paint product?

I thought light sanding, prime and paint.  Grit?  Paint? I like Rust-Oleum.

I have used both rustoleum and DIY truck bed coatings in the past.  Of the two, I prefer rustoleum.

I did score 600.00 off shipping, but I'll be waiting until January to get them.  CBI wanted 900.00 to ship!  They were nice enough to refer me to an offroad shop on an outer island.  I hope they come as I specified.  It's a long wait.

i made mine out of 2x3 .25 wall tubing and welding it to a plate then to the frame.

i will say they are not semetrical. i sat on the ground and held them in place while a buddy tacked them in, we looked and said SEND IT. they both rub(one more than the other) and its been ran this way fer close to 20 years. call me lazy haha.

I have not learned how to weld.  But I'm going to by one soon.  Thinking Miller MVP.

I can use most tools but that is a skill I'm lacking in.

Next move..rear bumper.  After I learn.

$600 shipping :shocking:, was that for air frieght or by boat?

For the shipping cost alone you could buy a entry level quality 110vlt welder, think my first Hobart ran about $500.
Cyberweld has the 125 currently on sale for under $350, which is what I used to build everything from sliders to flatbeds, until a bought my MVP210 a few years ago.

Some of these stores on the mainland have only one shipping method and will not compromise.  Actual shipping quote...$900.00!

The place I ordered from gets regular shipments in container.  That's where I saved.

I am going to buy a welder and learn how to use it.  Then maybe a tube bender.  Have to buy the welder here or face the same issue with shipping$.

shoot for that price I could have built them for you and put them in a checked bag and come to help you install them...lol

I remember when I lived in Alaska the shipping being bad, but not that bad.

on another note don't discount some of the other off brand welders. I had a everlasting TIG welder that served me very well. I even built my first truck with a harbor freight welder and their offerings have come a long ways since 15 years ago.  I mean you don't need a Ferrari to learn to drive right? buy the Ferrari once you know how to drive or you won't appreciate it.

I have used rustoleum on a lot of parts only to have it chip off after some abuse. Zippo got me using Dupli-color engine enamel and I will never use anything else on parts that take a beating. The stuff is way tougher than most anything else in a spray can. It doesn’t come in as many colors as rustoleum but there are enough options. It also is a bit more money, but worth it.

Making my own armor?  What wall thickness for DOM bumpers and cages?  I figure diameter is a little more personal preference?  I suppose I'd mach it to my sliders if I ever receive them.

Poop pipe?  what pipe is that?  My sewer pipe is ABS.

I'm going to start looking at benders as soon as I can find a metal supplier and of course learn how to weld.  First headache rack then exo.  I'm to big for prefabbed internal cage.

I think I got it.  My waste pipe is all ABS to a cesspool.  There is no city/county sewer system here.  Which would require metal from the house to the street by code(I think).

Can you bend schedule 40 with a bender?  I'm new to all this.

I had my MC sliders powder coated. Any scratches/ dings are treated with black semi-gloss Rustoleum.

Did you prime first ?
I have used duplicolor engine primer before spraying the paint and other times just sprayed the duplicolor engine paint direct to metal. I havent noticed a difference. Either way it sticks real well and is super tough.

I'm going to town.  Napa says they engine enamel.  Still don't have my sliders since Nov. 4 order.  Waiting to see if the come correct.

Finally got my phone to upload pics to my computer.  So if I can  do so on Imageshack or others then I will post up.
