What i saw on a friends bike was a seat post that was spring loaded.  It could lock out to be solid but it would lower with weight on it for downhill and unlock it to raise up for cross country.

I ride a cannondale lefty. I lock out the fork when on the street and unlock for the trail. Had it for about 12 years. I love it. Great leg and cardio workout.

Ahh yes the dropper post. I just rebuilt one for my new bike.

I have too many bikes... Current favorite MTB is a Specialized Rockhopper with 29" tires. I've had both Trek and Specialized bikes, each has their pros and cons.

I ride mostly in the SF Bay Area, but am planning to check out some trails in the Sierras if I can find a bike rack I'm happy with that also won't break the bank.

been wanting a mtn bike fer awhile. new ones range from hella expensive to holy crap expensive, heck used ones around these parts are still expensive. i just want to mostly ride around on fire roads/woods/neighborhood mainly to loose weight. there is a shop in town and id prob go there to get fitted but im sure everything is way out of my budget without selling a kidney or 1st born.  being tall and heavy dont help either.

Have you tried checking Craigslist over a few months and also look at towns an hour or so away from home?

I found my Rockhopper for sale on Craigslist an hour and a half north of home after looking for a couple of months. It was a 2 year old bike then, I paid $250 and it was $800 new. The kid who was selling it worked at a bike shop and was upgrading to a full suspension bike; he'd replaced all the parts he'd broken, but the frame has a lot of aesthetic damage so it was priced low. There is no way I could have found a deal like this just watching posts closer to home (North Bay Area) for a short time.

I've always had a hard time finding bikes that fit me (tall sizes on women's bikes don't seem to exist) and Specialized has very well designed large and extra large frames. I (used to) work at a college campus (pre-covid, now I'm working from home), and most tall folks chose Specialized. But Specialized bikes do depreciate quickly in value and seem to need a bit of maintenance (unlike Trek bikes).

Just my two cents.

They all need maintence lol. Bikes on Craigslist and marketplace go fast and are selling for a lot
More due to covid and the lack of supply on the new market

Good point, I haven't checked Craigslist recently and keep forgetting used bikes are getting more expensive due to covid. I do recall reading a joke somewhere that "bikes are the new toilet paper."

Yeah, they all need maintenance (what doesn't) but I have heard that Specialized bikes seem to depreciate faster and need more maintenance when they get older, whereas Treks last longer with less issues (this has been the case with my two used Specialized bikes and two used Trek bikes, but it's a small sample population).

I guess I don’t see how one would last longer. Other than frames the components are all the same or similar among price points

I cant knock my cannondale at all. I got it in 2007 and have only been through brake pads and tires/tubes. Keep it all greased and its happy. Heck, I havent even been into the fork yet.

As a bike mechanic, I assure you that given the same components there's little difference in maintenance between brands. Full suspension does change that a little bit, some pivot/linkage designs burn through bearings faster etc. I don't really have an opinion about trek or specialized, other than that the owner of specialized is a litigious richard and they're both bland mass market brands.

At the end of the day, mass market frames are pretty similar these days and everybody uses roughly the same component grades across similar price points. I'd take a 15 year old frame with high end components over something midrange and new any day. Way less plastic, way more metal. Way more durable. I guess that logic is why we're all still driving these 40 year old Yotas?

I looked at a bland Trek Marlin 7 this morning. I think it’s the bike I “want” but could probably be well served with a cheaper dual sport option.

When you get one we should go ride especially if you get the marlin. We can hit banner or the port gamble trails

Well, there will be "plenty" of opportunity if I ride the bike twice as often as I drive the 4Runner!

Roughly, 800 bucks. I am using higher end shimano XT parts. I could do it for less. It may end up being a little less.

I was looking at a Specialized Rockhopper full suspension.  Size XL no more details the guy pulled the ad.  Don't know the components now.  $3500 used.

Good price possibly depending on condition?  I have been out of MT. bikes for a while.

no idea if thats a good deal or not on the rockhopper.

when i was checking out bikes on the interweb i found the giant talon. from the factory it was less than $1000, i was interested in the 2 series and it was like 800 bucks. seems to get good reviews and will work fer us big guys.
i ended up getting my dads orbea that he won at his gym a few years ago(weight loss challenge or raffle). only time he rode it was from the stage to his truck. he will never ride it so i got it when i visited my folks over Christmas. ive ridden it a handful of times so far and need to get on it more to help get my fatass back in shape.
