What's up

Just picked up my first Toy. It's an '84 Xtracab Deluxe 4x4.
It's all stock from what I can tell, maybe someone can tell me what all the extra stuff under the hood is?

Picked it up for....well, actually got her free.
Dude tht owned her was old and died, had no family left, so I jumped on the opportunity to take over. She's just about mint for an '84, especially considering ITS ONLY GOT 89K ON IT
So I couldn't say no. Changed the oil, and  after she's warmed up(she doesn't stay on alone unless) she runs stronger than  any other '84 I've seen. Took it out to Table Mesa Rd in Phoenix right after and she can get it no problem. Equipped with some 10 year old studded tires, she's a keeper in my book. Now, is just to learn how to turn her into a Marlin Crawler!
Thanks for the add, looking forward to asking a bunch of dumb a$$ questions and looking like a total noob.

Now these are 2 things i wasnt 100% sure about what exactly they were...

This first one looks like some kind of a booster im guessing, towards the right side of the image center...?

And this red one has a sort of turn valve? Maybe a relief of some sort? Hard to tell under all the tape? but if anyone has an idea i can quit guessing

OVRAROK

in first pic..looks like possible external filter or pump..are there electrical wires going to it?
Second pic looks like battery switch..

I'm not sure about the wires I'll check when I get back.  But the tubes are piped into what looks like the heater core. The second one definitely has wires tho.

Rocksurfer

Could it be a heater core filter? Usually they are pretty small though

With it hooked up to the heater core coolant line that is what my guess is.

The 2nd pic is a battery cut-off switch, likely being used as a theft deterrent due to where it is located.

With 89k original miles, still clean and stock, that is a "Survivor", I would seriously reconsider your plans of turning it into a crawler, or wheeling it much.  Here is an idea of what it could be worth.

Not saying that you could get that much for it, but due their increase in value, you could likely get more than enough for it as is, to buy a buy or build a rig and still have money left over.

Nice word of advice. I definitely appreciate that thought and insight. What would you suggest I could do maintenance-wise to it, besides oil/fluids obviously, to get rid of the cold startups? It also smells like straight emissions out of the exhaust...

Hey The_Solo_1....

Welcome to the forum.  That pickup is a really nice find!

These early Toy 4x4s are becoming more rare.  You can find one from a range of condition and year but they may be upwards to the $20Ks, or thrashed to near death.

I looked for a Toyota 4x4 from a 1984 to 1988 for about 2 years. One morning in 2006, I was checking out TruckTrader and saw a 1986 4x4 XtraCab 22RE 5-speed that looked really nice in Los Angeles. I told my wife that I was sure it was already sold.  She said call anyway. It was already sold but had not been paid or picked up.  After about 45 minutes on the phone with the seller, I offered him my final best offer of $1,500 more than his prior offer but he wouldn't accept it.  I left him my cell number and said "If you change your mind, my final offer is $1,000 over your previous buyer". He called me back in 2 hours. I caught a plane to SoCal that night, gave him $5,500 in 100 dollar bills, and drove it back to AZ by daylight the next morning.

To each his own, however I would encourage anyone to consider restoring and preserving these early Toyota pickups rather than modifying, hacking them up, dumping $1,000 into them, and ultimately destroying them on a rockcrawling trail.  After actively 4-wheeling for almost 20 years, if I could go back 20 years knowing what I know now, I would have built a buggy and not 4-wheeled my first 1986 and my 1985.

With as little miles that are on it, not much is needed beyond what you are doing now, might check/replace the spark plugs and cap and rotor.

What is the issue with cold starts?  Is it the amount of times the engine has to turn over before it starts, or does it not want to start at all?  Once warm, does it start up with about 5 cranks of the engine?

Is there a heavy fuel smell out the exhaust when warm, or just on start-up?  Any blue smoke when getting on the throttle when driving around?  If just rich smell on start-up, that is normal, as the engine will run rich until warm.  If it still smells rich once warm, or you see blue smoke when on the throttle, it could be running rich, which could be a timing, carb issues, or possibly a clogged egr valve.  Timing or carb issues could also be a cause of your cold start issue depending on what it is actually doing.

The problem is, had people not started hacking them up or turning them into raisins off-roading starting around 2000, the "survivors" today, wouldn't be worth the amount they are.

You guys are cool as :pokinit:. Thx for all the advice. Out of uncontrollable excited-nes I went to the car wash late last night (2am this morning) to wash all the Red Rock dust off from it and started detailing. Besides a few dings in the red, the corner plastic cover on the bumper, and a small area of broken inside paneling, its cosmetically good.

As far as the start ups go,when cold it cranks and will turn over but only after giving it a little bit on the gas pedal. It will then run for a brief 2-3 seconds then wants to die unless you keep slightly on the gas. It acts this way until the temp gauge reaches about middle way. At this point, it runs a little rough almost like missing cylinders until you get in it and drive it down the road, which then eventually evens out and you only can hear a slight ticking noise in the engine as it idles.

The smell usually goes away after its been driving, no smell after its warmed up either but I have noticed a rotten egg kinda smell a few times after driving it around. (im sure im worrying the inevitable at this point) I just want it perfect I guess haha.

Thx again for the replies, you guys are great feedback.

Yah the plastic formula used in the early production years of the 2nd gen, gets quite brittle with age, especially when exposed to the sun.  Fortunately the panels are same to '88 so you might be able to find good replacements.  You can repair them using fiberglass.

The start up seems normal, not being efi, giving it extra gas once fired, is normal.

The ticking noise, if actually ticking and clacking, is just normal valve tick for Toyota engines of that era.

A valve lash/adjustment may be worth it, if there is no record indicating when it was done last.

The rotten egg smell from time to time, is an indication the catalytic converter in on its way out.
