Brake shudder / pedal pulsing
« on: May 30, 2020, 02:27:00 PM »
*Did some work and getting a shudder when braking, it feels like a "very" warped rotor, pedal moves up and down with each revolution of the wheels/tires. More the faster im moving, its hard to tell going slow as it requires pressure to feel this but its obvious when slowing down above 10-15mph.

Im stumped and about to buy a line lock kit to isolate the source, whether its the front or rear setup causing the problem.

*Work ive done(setup)

Upgraded front brakes; FJ drilled/slotted vented rotors, larger calipers think sw13b (has 4 45mm pistons) with ifs hub swap.

New rear brakes; shoes, drums, hardware.
(already has fj wheel cylinders).

New 1ton 1 1/16 MC from C&C.
(Already has large dual brake booster).

•Trailgear wheel bearing lock nuts and reset bearings again, no unusual play, slight movement if you give it a hip bump when on jackstands but isnt loose if the tire is rocked by hand, always been normal for all the years ive had it. Replaced bearings multiple times past 9 years, however was lazy and didnt swap the races in the ifs hubs with the swap but inspected them and races looked fine.

Everything is well lubed and bled with new fluid, the rear drums seem to be adjusted and not dragging, havnt checked since last run. Truck still had shudder when drums were loose Or Over adjusted when i was messing with it before the run. It stops great and doesnt seem to be chatter from the D&S rotors which would be more a vibration than this pulsing/warped rotor feeling. Not getting feedback through the steering wheel but also did hydro-assist with the brake upgrades so maybe its masking it of its the front brakes.

*Things ive checked

•rotor runout on each side deviates no more than .002"
They were re-drilled and use 2 bolts to attach to rear of ifs wheel hubs

•lifted rear end with tires on and got up to 3rd gear tried different braking methods was unable to verify its the rear but did feel a little wheel hop in certain spots, assuming tires need balacing again
37x14.50 toyo m/t , ive had for a long time but never had a brake shudder like after the work, they run very smooth on the road and highway nothing like egg shaped tsls i had before.

•PS caliper has been clearanced with a file and inner rotor edge sanded to smooth and deburredbecause it was scrubbing the inner face/edge of the rotor under weight as wheel bearings naturally have a slight /  \ . This caliper rotor combo has a very tight clearance on the inside of the caliper.
Its no longer touching and rotor seemed to help a little bit but its still an obvious shudder. (Ive had this problem before with other vehicles when wheel bearings have gotten loose and it has always worked to clean the rotor this way)

All feedback, questions, and criticism are welcome, Im located near McClellan if someone local is available to take a look at it and maybe test drive it to help trouble shoot, i can come meet you if its not too far.

Thanks eveyone, happy wheelin

Do you have a load-sensing proportioning valve? If so you could use it to isolate the problem front-to-rear.

That said if you've checked the front rotors with a dial indicator and they don't run out much, I would suspect a rear drum is out of round.

Put the vehicle on four jacks or a lift.  Run it in 4wd. Apply slight brake. Should be obvious.
hold this. . .

I deleted the crusted lpsv years ago, never locked up the rears in a panic stop.

Can a proportioning valve adjust enough to completely lock out the rear circuit so i can narrow it down?

Thats why i was considering a front line lock, plus rear digs would be a plus

I have yet to check the new drums for warpage any idea how to check them aside from getting them turned?

Im failing to see how having all tires off the ground will narrow it down, thats why I just tested the rears. As it would be the same as driving it with all 4 up

You think i would be able to see one of the tires if it has a hard spot on the brakes?
