I remember seeing a discussion on converting the "ignitor" (module) on my '81 Toyota Truck to a more available one,I saw Ford and GM mentioned.  :headscratch: Can anybody help me on this? Do you have a link to that discussion?
My coil tests fine, but even the Toyota DEALER doesn't know how to test the Module, and nobody can find a listing to replace it. This one has what I assume is a Toyota # of 89620-35110,and an ND # of 131100-2421. HELP-This is my only 4X4,and I'm caring for my older Sister full time now,she lives about 1.5 miles away.
Thanks for any help you can give, and Merry Christmas to all of you!

The FSM details how to test the module, at least it does for my '85. That said the easiest way to test it for me was to swap it out with a known good one. (supposedly) good ones can be found on Ebay, too.

Is this what you're looking for?

https://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/179253-complete-bypass-toy-ignitor-coil-30-a.html

There is a lot of info on this if you google search "toyota gm ignition module".  I would stick with toyota parts myself.

Toyotaadict beat me to it, that thread has the conversion I remember. Although I personally am not a fan of GM electronics from back in the day

I had the GM ign swap with a MSD coil on my truck for a while. Worked fantastic until it didn't lol. I highly recommend carrying a backup ignitor, mine went out a couple times and I had to walk

Theres no real way to test an ignitor.  They work or they dont. Or as i saw recently, work sorta in a real fucked up way.
Ignitor is available aftermarket. I swapped one a few years back.

I would definitely NOT recommend GM ignition parts.
hold this. . .

I decided to go with the GM module conversion for a couple of reasons. One is that a GM module only takes about 4 minutes to replace, and the other is the COST of a replacement Toyota ignitor. (If I'd known about that,I could have grabbed one or two  off parts trucks a friend had-before he had 'em crushed.) Add to that the fact that I can carry a spare module in the glovebox, even as cluttered as it is. I can buy a new one for under $20.00 at ANY parts store. I spoke to a friend on a 4X4 Forum about the truck dying on the road, and his first question was, "Did you try replacing the ignitor?" I said, "Not yet-why did you ask about that?" He said, "It's the Achilles Heel of the Toyota-it's either already failed or it's GONNA fail." :dunno: Anyway,I'll bash on regardless. I'm finding an acceptable heat sink for the new module;once that and the mounting is handled,it'll only take me a few minutes to do the re-wiring  to hook it up and make it operable again. I'm using the stock coil and as much of the original wiring/plugs as I can,and the old ignitor will supply the mounting base for the new module.
I like keeping things stock as much as the next guy,but this truck is already far from original,so if something different is easier, cheaper or better than stock,I gotta go with it.

PS-I'm already almost done with this,I'd have preferred the Ford blue grommet module,as they're MUCH tougher than the GM ones, but didn't find the info on the conversion in time.

I would definitely NOT recommend GM ignition parts.

I built an ignitor for my 85 22R from a wire schematic/photo from Benjamin on the old Offroad.com site many years ago.  The Toyota ignitor was only available at that time from a dealer and was about $400.00.  I bought a dealer ignitor.  I then built the failed one with a GM ignitor, it was about $5.00 at Autozone at that time, and took me about 1 hour to wire and solder in the GM ignitor module.  I tested it in my truck for about a month... no problems.  I replaced it with the factory new one, and kept the GM-built one under my seat as an emergency back up.
