W56B transmission and transfer case lube change.
« on: Mar 24, 2019, 01:44:39 PM »
Does anybody know how often one should change the gear lube in a W56B transmission and in the transfer case? Also does anybody know which transfer case is bolted up to my W56B? It's an 88 4Runner 22RE.

I like to change differential, and transmission/ transfercase every year.  Your w56b should have a 21 spline gear drive tcase. Top shift.

The FSM only shows "Inspect" every 18 months for "normal" driving.

For severe driving, it shows replace every 18 months.

If you do any deep water crossing, you should definitely check the gear lube afterwards.

If no water crossings and no frequent towing something, I'd go 24 months.

Gnarls.

Thnaks. I hadn't checked or changed the lube for close to 4 years. It looked ok when I drained it. I try not to do any water crossing deeper than my hubs the truck's got way to many rust holes I'm afraid if I go any deeper than 2 foot ill ruin the brain box
