New front tow point for SAS
« on: Apr 10, 2005, 10:12:21 PM »
I am doing a SAS and am curious as to what you guys that have SAS trucks run in the front for a tow point. :headscratch:  The factory tow hook attachment point will be covered up by the new spring hanger. Strong tow hooks may not be as important for rocks but in the deep mud I will running in a good tow point is crucial. Please post pics of your front tow point Thanks.  :)

If I were to use the spring hanger I would need to reinforce it big time. Which is not out of the question. I don't have a bumper yet. But that is a possibility also. Any pics?

the front tow hook is junk anyways mine lasted about 3 good yanks and it riped thru the frameand went in the woods never to be seen again. we always just rap the chain around the front of the leaf spring

I don't trust or like towhooks.  I had one hit my windshield with me in it.  Ripped right off of the frame.  Glass shards went everywere.  I just hook the tow strap around one of my front spring hangers.  It will not rip off the frame because i have reinforced it in many places.

You should be able to tow off that bracket with no problem,,you you can't or question it then maybe you shoud beef it up anyway..It should take the stress no problem..

I don't see how you guys rip out your tow hooks??I have never had a problem..I guess you guys need to stop getting stuck :hahaha:

Everybody gets stuck when you go play in a mud pit. There are no rocks in Minnesota so deep mud and muddy trails are all we run in. Surprisingly, dozers and four wheel drive tractors put a lot of stress on things like tow hooks and crossmembers when it is pulling you out. ;)  We snap 4 inch straps, clevises, rip tow hooks and bumpers off and just about anything else you could imagine getting torn off and some things you can't imagine ever getting ripped out. I've been stuck up to the rockers in a chevy pickup with a 9 inch lift and that was not pretty. That took a tow truck with a massive hydraulic pto winch and about 400 ft of cable. He parked the truck on hardpacked ground with the wheel lift down as an outrigger and it just pulled him backward digging the wheelift down farther into the ground until it started pulling the truck out. :o

The tow hook hit my window when i was in a valley type section at Praire city.  the whole thing was mud and there was no way i was going to make it up the last part.

That is really scary when that happens. A kid I know was pulling out a stuck tractor when something broke sending metal through the back window of the truck hitting the kid in the head and taking a significant chunk of his skull out. If the skull damage wasn't enough, he was knocked unconcious which caused him to floor the accelerator which lead to a violent rollover with him inside. He was in critical condition and in pretty bad shape for a long time.

Mud rules, I love it. Nothing like shooting 30 foot rooster tails all over your friend's truck. Nothing a pressure washer can't fix.

I don't like mud either, mostly after that windshield incident.

add a reciever in the middle of the front sping hanger/drop bracket. by far the easiest and safest way i have found for recovery.

Mud is a definate love hate relationship. I love playing in it, but I HATE the aftermath if I played a little too hard, Like clogged radiator, dead alt, stuck starter etc....

Of course all those problems where when I wheeled a JEEP.

I would Mount a clevis dead center of the bracket. If thats not beefy enough Maybe you can get creative and use an old Toy bumper, hack the chrome stuff off and use the mounts for some sort of anchor point.

I know what you mean with the tractor pull show when you get stuck, A factory tow hook does not cut the mustard.

I read on some forum that a lady was killed in England I believe, when her Land Rovers tow strap let go and de-capitated her, definately serious stuff, and should be done right.

I hear ya my flatbed project used to be under $200 with the welder rental and materials but adding other things to it is over $300 easy between that and other stuff I am broke.
I still want to do a 5mge engine swap too that's another $300 plus I am getting another running 1st gen IFS truck for parts it's only $250.
It's easy to spend 2g's and still not be done with the thing. If you look back hind site always helps building the next rig.

Anyways I am doing the same kind of thing on my truck receivers on both ends of the truck and a mulimount winch. It makes perfect sense to do it espeically for groups of trucks to do it that way you can share the winch if need be.
