This has been sitting in a friends driveway for a LONG time. Instead of watching it rust away I decided to bring it home and work on it for him in my spare time. It's a four seater on a single cab frame.

Home and ready to be unloaded into the shop.

Once in the shop, pulled the chassis off so I could start cutting off everything to leave just the frame rails and cross bars.

After cleaning the frame I set the front hanger. It's not a comp rig so I boxed the back of it in to give it some more strength.

With the hanger in place I was able to Figure out where I wanted to chassis to sit. So I could move the engine back and down.

The back of the frame isn't box and has lots of holes. Instead of trying to patch it in I just cut off about a foot. It's also a odd size so I had to bend up some plate to match it. Crossbrace and shackle hangers where able to be burned in after that.

joeyf

Got the rear inboards mounted. Then started the rest of the chassis mounts. I really like the hendrix mounts but around here you get lots of rain and mud. So I made them without the dimpled holes.

joeyf

Not sure how the stock housing is going to handle the weight of the rig with inboard spring. Should be ok but would rather be safe than sorry. So I did a back truss and plated over the diff to help slide over rocks.

joeyf

At that point I was waiting for parts so I cut up a 55 grill to fit. Not sure if I am going to keep it like this. I really like how one of the guys on pirate did his front end on his goat ibex chassis. May cut the front end up and do something very similar to that, but I will get to that later on in the build.

Finally found a 300 for a decent price, so I was able to weld up the home made adapter that a friend makes. Its about a inch longer than the one AA sells.

sickkkkkkk

Thanks 👍

Got the trans and cases in to see how I want to mount it all up.

Decided to keep the skid and cases mounted separate. With them being separate I went ahead and filled all the holes in the skid.

With the skid separate I was able to push it up into the frame and mount it flat instead of angled like stock. The driver case mount is a little smaller than I would like but I have to keep it under the top of the frame and still have room for the exhaust.

Am a little afraid of how the lower chassis tubes are going to last. Over the years my sliders have been pushed up so far that I can't open the doors. So I welded up some ruff stuff tube reinforcements, they aren't going to make them last forever but I am hoping for longer than not doing anything at all.

joeyf

This wasn't high on the priority list but I was next door to the exhaust shop so I stopped in. I wanted to butt weld it and clean it up real nice so it looked OEM but they didn't have anything the same size. So I just picked up a scrap piece of stainless with a tight slip fit.

#9
Started the passenger side tube reinforcement. Measured wrong so I had to order another strip of it so I can finish it up. Definitely will be glad when it's done, I hate these long welds. Take so long to make sure I don't warp the tube.

Help Me to understand what's going on here?

It's a bent stick of flat plate.

joeyf

Starting on the front so I can get this thing off the jacks.

Took most of the afternoon with all the grease and grinding to get it to this point.

Will rotate and widen it after work with 3" spacers I had picked up for this a while back.

joeyf

Cut the balls. First time and a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.

The ball was a press fit but the spacer to the housing I was able to beat in. A 2x4 fits perfect in the ball for this.

Rotated the balls 8* from stock and slid it under to see how it looks. Still don't like it but am holding off on that until I fix the shackles.

Tossed the press on to see how the rig is going to sit on the leafs. Shackles end up vertical so I am going to push the frame tubes forward.

joeyf

Finally got a little time to work on this after work. Marked out there new spot. After cutting out the old tubes/ installing the new ones, was left with some big ugly holes. Cleaned it up with some plate.

joeyf

Haven't touched this with summer rolling in and it making it way too hot in the shop to want to do anything. So here is some pics of our wheeling trip we just got back from.

The old rig is still going strong for how little I take care of it. Took it down the road to the store, about 6 miles from our turn off to camp. GPS showed 67 top speed and a average of 55. Still had two gears to pull but the road was to windy to get to them.

Taking a little detour. A friend finally wants to get away from the mini axle and run a fj80, so i sold him my spare 80 axle. I have been camping on the hellfire steering for a couple years so I am going to kill two birds with one stone, sold him my slee steering and will finally be swapping over to the hellfires.

THK Matt

you doing hellfires on a mini axle?
