TSL radials
« on: Apr 08, 2005, 06:40:47 PM »
I need some advice.  I have an '82 4x4.  I want to run a set of 34 X 9.5 R15 Swamper TSL Radials on my stock rims.  Right now I have a set of 30 X 9.5 R15 Dominator A/Ts.  What will these tires do to my mileage? What amount of lift and from what company would I get it?

in theory they should increase your mpg but they will slow acceleration.

Thanks.  Any reccomendation for a lift?  I might go smaller on the tires and buy Marlin's 4" Springs

You have a first gen. you can run 35's with just rears up front and tubbing of the firewall.  Its actually simple to do.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

untill you get a more powerful motor then that pathetic 22r i wouldnt go much larger than 31-10.50s the sad thing is that a 350 swap in to your truck would give you the same gas mileage

to hold ,e off till crossover and marlin springs i got 4"procomp springs for the front for $50 a piece from 4wheel parts.

then i did a chevy spring conversion, and i can run 33"s with no rubbing. i want to go 36" irocks later but this will hold me off. they are kind of stiff, but they compress ok while flexing. but they were cheap and they fit, all i needed were bushings and a drop drag link.

im not saying this is the ultimate set up, but it was cheap and it works.

i have no problem with running 33"s with stock gears, but i have a 22re with maybe 16 more hp

you can run them with no lift.  buddy o mine runs 33x12.5 bfg mt's  and only rubs when flex and turned  fairly sharp.. with a skinny tire it should be just fine.   btw  he has a 83  so  basicly the same

the 34's will run the springs,,with 34's you need a 7 in wheel to run them reliably with out bead locks..I see them blow all the time with a 8 in wheel at 10 psi..with the 7 in wheel your off set sucks and will rub your springs..spacers will be needed to clear the leaf springs while turning in the front..

spacers on a daily driver is just a bad idea. i have seen a few spacers fall apart with normal on road driving

huh?  i get 24mpg on the freeway with my 22R with my heavy swampers, and don't have to worry about smashing stuff with a 350.  not to mention that 350s suck and are overdone.

Can you say too much power breaks everything, gets total crap mileage (unless efi) and too heavy?  Its a been there done that situation.  Its a stupid swap for offroad usage.

Yes it is a decent swap for mud and sand.  But it has a nasty tendancy to break ring & pinions at will.  You can take that to the bank.  I have 10 destroyed 3rd's from my truck.

the biggest problem with spacers is they are alum,,and just like a new set of alum wheels they need to be checked after they have been put on,,or yes,,they come loose..the alum needs to be,,lets say formed,,,after that there good to go,,and and a little lock tight never hurt..i know plenty of people running them fron and rear on daily drivers with no problems.getthe marlin spacers and you can't go wrong..

my wheel spacers are only 3/4". just wanted to make my tires not rub the springs. i have longer wheel studs installed, so no worries of re-torqueing

gewehr43 is talking about getting something like 15 mpg out of the 22r he has. most carburated 350s i have dealt with get that and if you step up to fuel injected you can get 20 out of it.

if your talking 34-9.50-15s the draw back is lots of side wall and blown beads was an issue for my buddy..He ended up getting bead locks and had  no more worries..

the 34-9.50s say to use no wider then a 7in wide wheel. It says that on the side wall...but bead locks really make those tires shine..My buddy got 15x8 beadlocks for 109$, a wheel..

I just re-read your origional post gewehr43, if you are going to put these tires on your stock rims you'll be just fine.  Go for it I think the stock rims are about 6" wide so you shouldnt have any issues.
