Max tire size on stock Toyota rear axle?
« on: Apr 08, 2005, 11:45:24 AM »
I've got an 86+ rear axle just waiting for me to put it on the truck and was wondering what's the largest tire people are running on the stock rear axle.  Also, if anybody has upgrades rear shafts, which ones and what tires sizes?

Probably depends on waht you want to do with it. But I would think that 35s or 37s are the limit on stock shafts...  :driving:
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

The rear shaft are really strong stock,,and with cromo its even better..You run into a ring and pinion problem though..To reliably run larger meats and use the skinny you need a bigger ring and pinion,,4.88/4.11..If you good to it 5.29 will be ok,,just a matter of kinny pedal and vehicle weight..The stock rears and not bullet proof,,but for a stock axle there beef..Put it this way,,the rear is the least of your worries,,you have front end issue 1st..
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

snohman ran 39.5's for awhile without breaking i think.  He stepped up to 42's and broke a rear shaft the trip he rolled it.  I have heard that rear toyota axles are as strong as stock dana 60's.

dont go under 4.88 gearing if you like the skinny pedal,  but chances are the birf or drive shaft will go long before the rear shafts do

and yes  toy rears are the same diameter and strength as dana 60's

look at it like this Marlin runs 35's   chances are theres a reason

4.88s = 8 pinion teeth
5.29s = 7 pinion teeth and even smaller pinion.

that's just common sense, at least on a toyota axle.  and i'd trust marlin's word over just about anybody's in the business.
