I have a 1983 Toyota Pickup 4x4, 4 speed. My transmission started to make noise when I was going up a hill, I shifted out of 3rd and into fourth and then the problem arose. I've read a bunch of forums and talked with a few of my Toyota friends and they all said it was my throw out bearing. So I took out the transmission and TC, and when I looked at the clutch and throw out bearing they were fine, but still went ahead and replaced them. Problem was, the noise is still there. It sounds like sand in a skateboard bearing. It makes noise through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse. No harsh noise like I described before in 4th gear though? I read that 4th is a 1:1 so there isn't a big load on the drive train when driving. So after more reading I feel that the main bearing or something like that is bad inside my transmission. Any help would be awesome.

Remove the shift boot(s) so you can see the tranny.

Go for a drive and listen..............

Might be input bearing or countershaft bearing.

That should be a L48 trans. If so, junk it and swap a w56 in place. You'll need driveshafts from the truck the w56 comes from but it is a great upgrade. The L48 was a junk trans. I've been through 5 or 6 in my rig.

Agreed. That is what originally came in Ol' Blue (LittleSteve's truck) getting rid of it was a welcome upgrade although it still only has a G-52. But plans are in the works for yet another upgrade.
If switching to a W series trans you will also need to address the cross member since the trans mount will move back about 5 inches.
