So I've been having issues with my current beadlock setup, Little things like no balancing out and loosing the inner bead every now and then so I decided to upgrade.  :rockingout:

Not sure what you guys are going on about  :ha_ha:

But just to clarify, still running bead locks as there defiantly required for serious snow wheeling  :rockingout:

Crocks

I get very serious in the snow at 5 psi, Without beadlocks. My third year on the irocks, yet to throw a bead.

My comment should be in the thread I started about too little or too much, but for me, 20+ years of 4-wheeling, I NEVER once popped a bead off a rim, and I NEVER once had a flat tire on the trail, I never had bead locks.   :blah:

Air down PSI was typically 10 lbs for rocks, and 4 lbs. for sand, snow, mud.  I had both my 86 longbed and my 85 standard cab in the sand dunes a half dozen times - duning hard with the rest of the crazies and NOT ONCE did I pop a bead.  Many snow-run and mud-run trips,  Mud tires were always mounted on 15" alloy wheels.   :gap:

Was I just really lucky? :dunno:

Hey fair enough! I probably should have phrased that a bit differently, you are right they really aren't required for most guys. Half of our group doesn't run any sort of bead retention, but they usually stay around 5psi and don't have a issue.

Now recently I've found my self breaking trail most of the time and 5psi wasn't cutting it. Towards the end of last winter I was messing around with 0-3psi and as you can see on the last two pics of post #66 I did manage to drop a bead, but that was defiantly the lower end of the spectrum. But on that same note if you carry the tools and have the abilities to re mount a tire, why even add the extra weight of the bead lock? I guess I really like the piece of mind

It depends so much on the particular tire and rim.  I have had bias swampers that would roll off in the mid teens and my goodyears would stay on my 8" steelies at 2 psi.

And the the bead lock on wheels.  Some are more pronounced than others.  When I worked at the tire shop, some wheels took alot of PSI to seat a bead.  Others not so much.  You could tell by the "POP" on which wheel had a higher bead lock.

I remember when Hummers were all the rage, and we used to get calls out to Sandlake all the time.  Cause their Hummer rolled a bead, and the central air couldn't air up the tire.  16.5" wheels don't hold a bead very well.

3rz swap, axle truss, hydro assist?

I still don't plan on adding a truss and hydro assist isn't in the picture quite yet. But I've been running my spare stock birf since my chromo broke, so I'm replacing that and freshening up the rest of the axle. The 3rz is going in and its a bit heavier so I'm adding a leaf and re working a few other things in the front

rybike

So this was my big reason for pulling the axle. My steering links have been hitting the frame at full bump and I didn't feel like welding it with a motor in, so what better time than now

Pass side capped in

plated both sides of the frame rail and painted, should have gotten pics before paint but I neglected to

The driver side I took even less pictures but you get the idea, the outside plate looks very similar

rybike

Got it back on all 4 wheels today, sitting a bit taller than planned but it will settle

Looks good. Nice to see you didn't truss the axle. You don't need it, more times than not I have seen a good straight housing get warped after trussing it. You're knuckle gussets are all that is needed.

Agreed, I'm no engineer but the way I see it all of the forces are between the leaf spring and the trunnion

Now with the 3rz swap. I've been struggling with getting the motor mated to the trans, seems like 3rd time was the charm. My first attempt the trans was in place and I tried to bring the motor into it, But as you can see in the first picture I struggled getting the motor on the angle it wants.

Next attempt was dropping the trans and bolting the motor to the mounts, I had a buddy there to help me get the trans up but between the firewall clearance and the angle of the whole deal we just could not get them mated.

After struggling for awhile my old man got home from work and gave us the great idea to put them in as one, so out came the motor and trans again to get mated on the bench. It's a tight fit putting it all in as one with a uncut core support but it does go

I mean that rag on the reservoir doesn't do much, but I've found it just keeps a bit of the oil mess down  :dunno:

Toy-only, I was a little weary of the chilkat ones after seeing people adding washers underneath

rybike

I guess I should update this, the 3rz has been running for almost a week now. I've been taking it back and forth to school about a hour drive away and it's been amazing, seems better on fuel than my 22re and the added power makes highway driving a breeze. Still have some loose ends to wrap up like cleaning up the wiring and finishing the exhaust, but that's easy enough

Depends, We don't have smog checks so you can basically drop what ever in and get away with it unless you are issued a vehicle inspection. If that's the case the motor has to be newer than the original and equipped with all the factory emissions components

redneckcustoms13

Glad to see your still keeping that steering reservoir warm. Night and day difference between 22re and 3rz huh?

All about a warm p/s reservoir in these cold Canadian winters  :gap: But ya I went into this not expecting much more than a semi modern efi system, as people like to say it's still a 4cyl. But I'm pleasantly surprised! Just what the truck needed, not to heavy, improved power and stock reliability

So I'd like to think I use it a fair bit, maybe not every week but once a month it seems to get a workout. I have had the solenoids get hot and the winch would only go in reverse, that was after a long day of winching. I do plan of switching to a albright solenoid but other than that I don't have any issues with it
