1991 Subaru Crawler build
« on: Sep 17, 2016, 09:16:18 AM »
so ive owned this 1991 legacy for 9 years, brought my son home from the hospital in it, practically lived in it, and racked up 421k miles on her. i love the car, shes a part of the family, but i lost the 4th gear synchro, a cv boot, the passenger window motor, shes showing her age.
what better way to honor her service than retire her on a set of mud terrains and dual cases?

so i purchased a new 16 outback to replace the ole girl, then bought a toyota hilux that was already fully built, the hilux will donate parts to the legacy, to make a solid axled station wagon. cause i can

parts list-

omlin engineering bellhousing (subaru ej series to toyota w series adapter)
tacoma clutch
w56 1988 4runner
marlin built dual ultimates, with rotated adapter, 23 spline internals, and 4.7 rear case
tacoma trd rear axle, with armor, spool
fj62 front axle, marlin birfs and chromo shafts, 4x4 labs six stud knuckles and arms (no t-g !)
spartan locker, ifs hub conversion, vented rotors, armor, 4.88s
cherokee/ruf hybrid front springs
63s in rear
marlin shackles and bilstien shocks
all on a set of 35 in mtrs- nope, 37x14.5 toyo mts

lots of trimming, and custom frame building lays ahead!

Sounds like a cool project!
I'll be watching this for sure. I love seeing not box stock builds. Are you you building a frame to put it on or boxing/plating the Uni body like they do with cherokees?

Great build, have thought of something like that, didn't know you could mate Subaru to Toyota.
Think next will be Astro on long bed 85.

Keep up the cool work

you cant mate a subaru to  a toyota, unless you're a bad-ass. fortunately, i am

it has 3/4 of the frame done as of this evening

At the beginning of this thread I thought you were putting this car on a toyota frame. Seeing now it appears you put a toyota rear axle with leaf springs under the uni body. Then made a front frame section to mount the front of leaf springs and steering box to. Am I seeing this correctly?

putting a car on a truck frame is the retarded way of doibg this, in my opinion. Im strengthening the unibody, sleeving the unibody, reusing moubtibg points where i can, it will be a solid axle Subaru, not a subaru bodied Toyota

DUUUDE this is amazing!!!I have seriously always dreamed of doing this to a second generation subaru forester. It would be like a mini mini 4runner almost. I was wondering if one could put the body on a firstgen 4runner frame. If i was loaded with money id totally do it just for kicks

it would be easier to do what i did, than a Body swap
