Info on centred 80 series rear diff
« on: Aug 30, 2016, 01:57:02 AM »
The more I look into it the easier it seem to just do it right once
Does anyone know what the wms to wms of a 80 series rear diff is if cut down and 2 short sides are used
Or do the know the axel length so I can work out the difference? thanks in advance
Only info I can find says 36-3/8 long side and 29" short but nothin to back it up

What I'm hopping for is to keep everything off the shelf except the housing + keep leaf springs all round for now
So I have something easy to repair if need be.

Plane: run 5.29:1 with Detroit auto lockers front and rear daily

Use 2x short side axels and make a 9.5" factory disk brake 80 series full floating centred rear

Stock 9.5" fj60 front axel with TG six shooter, MC 1" pins fitted with v6 mini rotors and calapers

The front is easy as all is bolt on and I have everything except the housing and axel but there under $100 for bare housing

Rear will I need a spair housing to machine out the spindle or will it be possible to use same one from side being shortened
And wms-wms? I'm hoping above measurements are correct as that will home me a 56-5/8" rear and 57" front, witch I can live with,

Seems like a lot of work, just run it stock and be done, building a custom axle opens a lot of cans of worms..
Good luck though.

Not looking at custom, just machine off ends and weld on to except to stock factory short side axels in a modded factory housing so it looks factory,

The problem down my way is we have a 2" tyre upsize rule basses of the factory axel, so 31" is largest axel legal on factory axels, use to be 35" last year but new laws changed that, to I have to fit axels from a car that had 31's to run 33" daily and so on

Was just thinking cut the rear of a Full Flot fj 60/62 so I can spin the 3rd and run left side 3rd instead or right,

none of the newer surf came with 31s?
some of our hilux/surf combos here came with 31s
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

After 05 they came in 29 and 30" then in 2012 29, 30 and 31" were factory, but there all 63" wms-wms and getting a soild front to suit is hard, 80 series is the only and high steer arms dont seem to be that strong on fj80 front. Compaired to my 6 shooters

Was just looking into this the other day. Fj80 rears are roughly 63" wms and are about 4" offset, so a centered rear is 59-60"
You can get a tacoma width tg housing for front and be close. Its +5"

i built a full floater rear housing with 80 series disc brakes using 2 short axles   on page 15 of project research and build ups  I Used the std hilux diff because it had a Detroit and didnt have to change the ratio  but another way if you wanted to use the 80 series diff  would be to just shorten the long axle side so it takes a short axle
own a 1989  LN106r diesel with a 1KZ-T 3 litre turbo diesel  bolted to a imported R151F gearbox with snorkel Rancho springs & shocks & Detroit lockers F & R & 11x 32  cooper sst ultimate dual transfer cases 130 litre fuel tank   full floating disc brake rear end

I actually just cut up my fj80 rear this weekend to make mine wider for a t100 build but i can confirm the axle lengths i measured were:

long side: 36-7/16"
short side: 28-15/16"
this is from inside mounting face on axle shaft to end of splined section.

WMS to WMS is exactly 63"

if you cut the spindle off at the weld with a cutting wheel like i did you can reuse the spindle. you will need to machine the ID of the axle tube or the spindle to get a press fit though.

here is a picture of the spindle i cut off and the axle housing i cut it off of.

if you want any more measurements while i have it apart let me know.
