Living in Alaska, I've hunted moose for 30 years, I'm now looking at building a different kind of hunting rig.
I've been given a 79 and a 94 toy pick ups to start the project.  I have 1-ton running gear and 45" agg tires to go under it.   Looking forward to the build.   So much to learn about these rigs.  Great site, thanks to all that contrubite.

Ha.   Yes it is!!  We skin and butcher into quarters before loading onto wheelers, trucks.

How much weight are you talking though. Unless you airbag it the truck is going to be riding on the bumps in the rear.

Maybe 6-800 lbs.   air bags are an option, might have to include this.    Was thinking the Chevy 63" spring for the rear.

Double up the main leaves, they should give you an additional 400-500lb capacity, and not stiffen the ride.

Will work for either set you use. 

If you go with the 63's, I would pick up a set of long bed or extra cab Toyota springs(56" I believe), combine them with the 63's, and see what you have to start out with, then add or subtract leaves to fit your needs.

How stiff are the 46" ag tires?

Shouldn't, Chevy springs are only good for about 2-4"of lift(most I know only get 2), the combination shouldn't be much more than the lift yield from the Chevy's and the thickness of the Toyota springs.  How much lift the combo would have can't be known until he builds the rig, and loads it with the base amount of gear he will carry all the time.  For my '90, I run one additional main and one between the 1st and second Toyota leaves, the additional leaves level the truck out, carry the daily load, and the additional 500lbs of gear when wheeling.

I think the ride quality of the Ag tires will be the determining factor, if they can't generate a soft ride at low psi, the airbags would be a better option.

dont worry about the rear springs. go with standard 63's and be fine. I put moose and caribou in the back of my 84 with just 1/2 ton 63's and they were fine.

this was from a Knik newyears run if i remember right. I did lots of hunting eureka with this guy, never failed me for hunting. my hunting skills did but never the truck...lol

where in AK are you? i lived in achorage/palmer for 4 years befoe moving to california.

I would say the 63's will handle a quartered up moose with the greatest of ease!

If you use a pic host site like photobucket.com, you are not required to meet a post count, nor are you limited to pic size.

Thanks for the info.   Looks like I can post photos now, however when I try, they keep coming up with the error of being to large.  I run off an iPad at home. Not many options to compress the file size. ( that I know of ).

The site limits pics to 140k to save server space, which is why most use a host site like photobucket.  There should be pic host site apps for the ipad.

If you aren't familiar with image hosting sites, you upload your pics into folders there,


Once uploaded, when you select the pic you want, you can select how you want to link the pic, the options are on teh right under the "Sign In"


Another option, if possible with the Ipad, is to take a screen shot of the photo on your Ipad.  With the screen shot, you can choose to upload the pics to the web, then link them to your posts.
