I hear ya Gnarly - we can't trust any of the numbers, especially since every source says something different.

That said, I'd bet a six pack of good beer that the stock cam is considerably smaller than the specs on that Melling.  I also agree with emsvitil that those specs just don't look right with the short duration and the relatively long .050" duration.  The Sealed Power cam looks a lot more like what I'd expect a stock cam to look like.

At some point in the next few months I'm going to swap the 20R head into the xtra cab truck.  When I do that, I'll degree the stock cam that's in there before pulling the head.  I'll video it too, so folks can see whether I know what I'm doing or not.

in my '82 with a 22r I did most of those engine mods engine bldr cam, ignition, header, Weber 38 carb, over sized valves, port and polish. Maybe I got 150 hp. Definitely an improvement but I dropped $1500-2000 and if would have just done a v6 swap I could have gotten twice the hp for same or less money.   Just saying.

$2,000.... 300 HP???  ... depending upon what V6 you swapped, right?

Yeah you're right. When I made that realization (probably in 2006) we were probably talking about a v8. Then after realization that a small block chevy 350 would be a little difficult to fit a v6 would work.    Either way $2k for 140-150 hp is  is rough.   Not to mention I pulled one of the exhaust studs and tried to fix it with a helicoil then a keencert. Ended up drilling into the water jacket.   That v6 swap was looking like a lot better decision.

By the way doing a msd ignition and a red top optima battery were one of my favorite upgrades. ...well that engine bldr came was nice too.  Man I miss that truck.
