R154 5th gear redesign?
« on: May 28, 2016, 11:46:24 PM »
I a rebuilding my transmission and chipped 5th gear. I ordered a new 5th gear from Toyota and the 5th gear is different. The inside splines are less on the new one vs the old one.
Everything lines up the same and the gear is identical other than that.
Anyone have any idea why they would be different?
I don't see any harm in using it. Anyone have a reason why I shouldn't?

The 1st pic is the old gear I chipped. The 2nd gear is the new oem 5th gear

Thanks
Tim

If you got it from Toyota, it should be fine.

Toyota has a habit of reusing parts for years.   Usually improving the part along the way.

My guess is that the gear is used on a later model transmission where the shaft doesn't have as many splines (cost cutting move, not an improvement move), and it's backwards compatible with earlier gears where the shaft had all the splines.
