:headscratch:

Technically, my 85's bed was close to a queen bed in outside dimensions so dropping the tailgate should have been close to workable. It was about 13 in shorter than extended cab bed.

What does everyone think about running a slush box in a first gen?

As much as I was a 2jzte, they are just too long. So thinking a 1 or 2uz and keeping the auto?

Automatics work great off road, it's just a different driving technique.  Definitely no need to run ultimate gearing with one. I don't know how durable they are off road.

What auto would you run behind the 1UZ? Just wondering what adapters are out there for and auto conversion.

So the 1uz comes with a a340e 2wd auto. You can rebuild it with the output shaft from a a340f converting it to a 4wd that will work with the factory ECU. Then marlin and a few others make adaptors that will take it to a RF1A tcase and your done.
If you see it, its for sale.

RATCATCHER38

Ah good stuff! Quite straight forward then. What is the a340e like as an offroad box? Can you manually select gears?

While I agree that an auto in a 1st gen seems like blaspheme, if it was behind a 1UZ what am I going to say?  It might keep your 1UZ from twisting everything off too which would be a bonus.

Depends in the driver.... You can feed the power in gently, the uz does not have a snappy power delivery its very smooth.
The R series of transmission are rated for the power...
