89 22re rn cal emissions system
« on: Mar 23, 2016, 10:00:25 AM »
I just  rebuild the heads on my truck,  due to electrolysis pitting of the aluminum head.  I put everything back together,  double checked my timing made sure it was @ 0*tdc and lined up the distributor.  I went to start it up and nothing happened no spark,  there is fuel because i can smell it on the tail end.  If anyone can help  me out with this little problem that would be great.    i want my  :turtle3: back up and running.

Did you verify that there is no spark? If it is firing jus not running, the timing could be 180 out.

Your timing is not likely set correct for initial start up.

When you reinstall the distributor for the 22re, you set the timing to 5*BTDC, align the rotor so that it is pointing straight up(12o'clock position), when you install the the dist., the rotor will rotate back to the 10:30 position, and should be aligned with the base of the vacuum port.

Providing you have installed the timing chain correctly and the engine was at 5*(#1 rocker arms should be loose), the engine should fire and run, allowing you to set the correct timing.

Snowtoy is right 5° btdc for a 22re and 0° btdc for a 22r.

5* BTDC with E1 and T1 connected. Did you make sure everything is hooked up the way it should be again? Or is there a ground you forgot to reconnect?

If you have no spark and you know the distributor in correctly.  Start checking the plug wires, to the dist, to the coil, and then to the ECM.  A volt ohm meter and a FSM will help alot!!  My wiring harness was bad where the wires for the coil ran over the exhaust, (22rte) and cooked the wires inside the heat sleeve.  I spliced in wires an ran it up and around the firewall, like Toyota should have done.
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

Snowtoy is right 5° btdc for a 22re and 0° btdc for a 22r.

Knock sensor won't prevent it from starting or running, it doesn't trigger anything with the ECU until reved above 2000rpms, then without a signal, the ecu limits the engines' performance to protect it from detonation.

Update  :usa:  Happy Easter everyone.  I just adjusted the valves.  And put everything back together and bam  :turtle3:  started right up.  After the smoke cleared from oil on the exhaust manifold.  I checked all my hoses for any leaks and I'm all good no leaks.  I just have to adjust the valves hot and I'm back in business.  Now i just have to find a 4x4 club in Humboldt County.   :driving:
