Weird timing Issue
« on: Nov 08, 2015, 08:04:06 PM »
I have an 85 pickup with the 22re, So I have set the timing multiple times, I have set the distributor at the #1 contact with the flywheel at 5 degrees before tdc and it will start right up, but when i put the timing gun to it, it shows that it is way too advanced (way off the marks on the block) then when I try to put it back one tooth it doesnt run good at all. Also the jumper for the timing does not seem to affect it. Any advice? This is my first time doing this on this engine, tps? vacuum? cam sprocket off a tooth?

did you just replace the timing chain on it?

with the jumper in it should idle low and be at the 5* mark on the oil pump, removed the idle will jump back up and should move the 12* mark, if this isnt the case then then the distributor is a tooth off of the timing chain has jumped or isnt on right would be my guess but it usually wouldnt start if the timing was that off

if everything was setup right on the timing chain and you lined up the bright chain links where they needed to be and the put the crank in the right position when installing the crank gear and the distributor is in the right place there is no reason the timing shouldnt be right? :dunno:

if you cannot get the timing to drop when you jump the two terminal, your tps is not adjusted properly

Having done this, you should start with the t-chain.  If you know it was installed correctly, i.e., followed the manual when you rebuilt it, then go on to other possibly issues, if you aren't sure, then you should redo the install.
