Old Wheeler
« on: Jan 27, 2015, 01:42:32 PM »
Hello everyone, I've been into offroading for more than 40 years from BMX, mountain bikes, motorcycles, pre-runners to 4x4's. Over the years I've collected many trails in my head and thought that I should put them to pen. So I started mapping the places I've been and it quickly got out of control. I first started just doing mostly GPS trailhead locations and once done with that started actually mapping the trails themselves. Thought that was cool so I soon started making foldout maps on paper. Currently I have completed over 40 complete maps and have GPS'd hundreds, some including motorcycle, Quad, mountain bike and of course my passion 4x4's. I have put them into regions, mostly California and the west.

Many of my friends have said I should sell them but I don't know if there would be enough interest, if there is I may even write a book. It may seem strange that I did this with no intention of releasing them to the general public when I basically made them so that even a novice could find their way to the trailhead, and also determine what trails they should attempt with their skill level.

I continue to map areas as I go along and don't see a reason not to try and see if someone would be interested in them. I understand there are plenty of people that will already know how to get to a trail but over the years I have come across many people that had gotten on a trail that was way over their capabilities that I have had to help them get back out or through to the end. So these maps include skill levels.

The maps include an overlay of the trail, how to get there, step by step directions on the trail, GPS coordinates, trail difficulty, local information, camping, points of interest, trail information, intersecting trails and more.

I will post one once I get enough posts,

Ron

Here I will try and link from my facebook account, if you can see them I am also thinking a topo map may be better but this was a free resource so I went with that for now. They are just a screen shot, the original will print on standard letter size paper and is a tri-fold. I also did some on legal size but I like the letter size. Much easier to produce on a hard stock, after I made about 30 maps I decided to see if there was hard stock legal size only to find out it would be a custom cut and too costly.

I've also created .kmz files for all the trails and can convert them to be able to upload trails to a gps unit which would be the ultimate end game. You would just load them in to your gps unit and then it would not only get you there but would also guide you along the trails.

Sorry I've been busy at work and then went to Arizona for a bit. Here's the new fold out cover for the maps, I've already changed all of them to look this way.

Very solid bro, 👍  very complete. And love the new logo. ;) well worth the wait. You can count on finding some printed copies at the least in my rig. (That is if I'm ever out that far west). Lol but definitely if you ever get as far east as Colorado.

Yes, all current maps were updated with the new logo.  Also just picked up a new mapping program and will update all the maps. The program will also make it possible to create GPS files for direct GPS unit uploads for those that have them. Still in the early stages of that though, need to make sure that they will work so some trail runs will be on the agenda after TDS to make sure they will work properly. Oh well the work never ends..... if you call that work. :gap:

Thanks,  slowly adding what is currently finished here. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008894118374 There is a lot more that will be added in the days and weeks ahead. Will be going to Chariot Mountain this weekend to complete some mapping information beyond what I already have and will then create a map for it. Pretty easy trail if anyone wants to go, it is close to Los Coyotes and has similar terrain. Group is meeting at 10:00am at the trailhead but my group will be meeting in the Ontario area and getting breakfast around 6:00am.
