drivetrain lift
« on: Mar 04, 2015, 10:24:17 PM »
I'm trying to figure out if my 84 pickup has any drivetrain lift, I ran a straight edge across the frame rails just in front of the trans crossmember mounts and measured straight up to the transmission. Anyone have a 84 or 85 that can tell me where a stock drivetrain sits in relation to the bottom of frame? I'm not sure if it matters but I have the trans that came with the 22r in 84.

stock crossmember? if there is any drivetrain lift at all there should be spacers between the mount and crossmember or an aftermarket cross member like a budbuilt that can be made special for a drivetrain lift.

The crossmember on the truck is a one off that a PO made. Thats why I'm trying to get a reference off the bottom of frame.

looked at mine, i have an 85 with a w56 and have a skys dual case crossmember though but its in the stock position, its flush with the frame, just the little fin on the bottom of my tranny hangs a little less than a 1/2" below frame but that might be due to my blown out tcase mounts

Thanks, it sounds like my drivetrain isn't lifted, my trany sits about 3/16 above the  bottom of frame rails, at least where I put the straight edge. I think mine is a g52 but it's probably about the same size as the w56.

You should post pics.  Stuff like this is hard to comment on logically without actually seeing it.

Does it have a body lift? And check the motor mounts to see if they are modified.

It has a 1.5" body lift and from what I can tell I don't think the motor mounts have been modified. I was trying to figure out if maybe just the cases and rear of trans had been lifted up some, I don't know how high one can go just raising the crossmember without raising the motor some. If it turns out that the crossmember is raised I'll look into raising the motor.

I'm still thinking maybe there is some drivetrain lift ha ha. The crossmember mounts to the inside of the frame, the brackets that it bolts to have 2 mounting positions 1.5" apart, same amount as the body lift, it's mounted in the upper holes. I went out and measured bottom of frame to bottom of output flange of rear case (dual cases) and got 3 3/8".

What do you measure at the rear output flange?
