Question about transfer case in my setup
« on: Jul 19, 2014, 02:11:27 PM »
Ok, I have an 86 Toyota with a SAS, 4.3 vortec and 4l60e tranny.... My question is the transfer case was originally mated to a manual tranny....
So I used gear oil in the t case.... Now it is mated to an auto tranny.... In the chiltons I have for the truck it says that t cases mounted to a/t use ATF and the ones mounted to manual trannys use gear oil.... So, the question is.... Is there a difference between the t cases mounted to different trannys or were they just trying to use the same fluid for each in case a seal went bad and fluids combined? What should I put in mine? Sorry for a possibly dumb question but I need to know. Thanks...

I believe they're   different.

Use the gear oil.

Ok that was the plan until I looked it up and saw that there was ATF in some.
Thanks for the response.

ATF is only in toyota auto transfer cases. Gear drive cases have gear oil
