Hello,
Im a Toyota newbie, ive always owned a jeep so im a little lost in the toyota world. So i got this 95 4runner in a trade yesterday. IT came with only one transfer case installed, but it came with another transfercase disassembled and attached to a marlin dual case adaptor. here are some pics of it to help with my questions...

MY questions:

1. What do i need to buy to finish the install of the dual case? (I have an idea, but what exactly?)

2. How do i test this case to make sure it was assembled properly?

3. what type of case is it? top of forward shift?

thanks for all the help

I believe the -10 means its a rotated case so first off you will need to get a new cross member. (Someone with more rotated experience please chime in)

Next it looks to be a top shift crawl box with a block off plate bolted on top. (Why they did that is beyond me, maybe to keep debris out)

To finish the install you would need another shifter/shifter abse (or a twin stick and use your old shifter for the crawl box), scrape off the old gasket and get a new one/use silicone, get a new cross member and skid plate (optional), as well as lengthen your front and shorten your rear drive lines.

To tell if it was assembled properly, take off the top block off plate, get a screwdriver and move the shift fork, it should have three positions, similar to your stock tcase J shift design for low-neutral-high.

Try each position to see if it is working correctly, turns smoothly, and doesnt feel weird.  You can count the amount of rotations its takes of the input for the output to go around once to see if you have 2.28 or 4.7 gears.

And if you decide to sell it let me know.   (i would keep it until you can afford to install it if I were you)

Am i missing anything gentlemen? I havent slept yet so i fee like i have dain bramage (for all those that like bill cosby as much as i do)...

Yeah your crawl box looks like a top shift otherwise it'd have shift forks hanging out those 2 front holes on the top.  You might want a speedometer cable extension, you'll want another shift boot for your new hole you'll have to drill in your floor for the rear t-case, you'll need to lengthen your front d-shaft and shorten your rear.  You could use your stock crossmember but your t-case mount probably won't last long and it'd hate you.

Actually, I'd say it looks like it was setup for forward shift, but is missing the shift forks. The main difference between top and forward shift is that block off plate and the shift forks. Forward shift has the block off plate and longer forks to go into a forward shift transmission. Top shift would have a shifter in place of the block off plate and you would not see the forks. Something funky is going on there, but it's pretty easy to correct it.

You'll need to identify the transmission that this is going to go behind, then get the shift forks that match. Also, you'll want to count the splines on the input gear and make sure it matches the transmission (it's either 21 or 23 spline input gear and has to match the transmission it's going to bolt up to).

If it were me, I'd take it apart and reassemble according to the doc's. But that's because I've gotten some badly assembled junk and don't mind spending a little of my time to make sure it's put together right.

how do i tell if the transmission i have in there now if top or forward shift? Its a 95 4runner with original 22re. I tried to reach up above the transfercase to feel if the shifter came out of the top, but it is too snug against the floorboard. I cant seem to find and write ups on identifiying transmissions.

A quick google finds my favorite site for exactly this...

As for a quick explanation.. forward shift simply means that the t-case shift handle is extended forward into the transmission. You can tell quickly by the placement of the t-case shifter. If it's very close to the tranny shifter, then it's forward shift. If it sits back 3-4" then it's a top shift.

The t-case in your pix above kind of looks like it's setup for forward shift because it has the block off plate, but there should be 2 rails poking out the front (to go into the tranny). If it were setup for top shift, there'd be a shifter there where the square plate is. To change a t-case between top/forward shift, that plate comes off, the 2 rails are shortend and a shifter goes in. Perhaps it has the shift rails for a top shift and is simply missing the shifter?

There's quite a few writeups on converting it yourself. Read thru the Pirate4x4 toyota FAQ's, I'm pretty sure it's in there as well.

Aside from maybe having to drill another hole, even if his trans is forward shift, he can use the shift as a top shift.
