Tcase Main Shaft Snap Ring Removal
« on: Sep 13, 2013, 07:40:25 AM »
I picked up a partially dismantled tcase and a set of Marlin 4.7s from a guy getting out of the sport, and I've been casually finishing the tcase dismantle so I can install the 4.7s.  I was out in the garage for probably more than an hour fighting that darn snap ring on the main shaft.  Any tips?  I'm guessing my Craftsman Lock Ring Pliers are not quite big enough to spread that ring...the other snap ring pliers in the pic were also tried but of course did not work.  I'd rather not have to buy another set of pliers, so how have you guys gotten them off with what you have?  And I guess if my only good option is to buy some new pliers, anybody have experience with a specific pair?

That snap ring is usually really hard to get off. Get a hammer and hammer on the bearing to get the tension off that snap ring. Hammer all around that bearing and then try it again.

Thanks all for the replies.  I hammered the bearing away from the snap ring and used the 2 screwdriver method and FINALLY got it off there.
