Front and rear third differences
« on: Sep 01, 2013, 08:24:40 AM »
I have a spare rear third. Wondering if I could do the gears in that, then swap it in my front.  :-\

I was thinking you would be on the coast side instead of the drive side of the gears

Toyota gears are not reverse cut for the front, about the only thing would be how they were originally broken in as to the actual strength on the front or rear. A broke in rear will be a little weaker in the front since steel has memory. This is one of the reasons that when you pull a stuck vehicle you don't want to pull with your rig going backwards since you are now on the weak side of the gear or as you put it the coast side, the side of the gear doesn't matter when it was broken in on the coast side.

Ok so if I build my Spare diff. I want to make sure I break it in in the position (front or rear) that it will stay? If you switch from front to rear or vise versa, would it help to do a break in period again or is it pointless at that point?

Thanks Rocksurfer. That answered my question. I guess I was just over complicating it.   :beerchug:

If I were to break in a spare it would be in the rear since it won't be on the coast side, you are more likely to break the rear over the front since that's where most of the load will be. Usually you will break something else in the front before a gear.

Yep. that is done all the time. Just make sure the gear ratios are the same.
