I got a flowmaster 44 chambered muffler hand me down for my 4Runner because the guy who had before it said it was like a glasspack and too loud.  I added an 18" resonator upstream and it has a nice low throaty sound cruising around without being too harsh, loud or ricey when you get on it.  So I would say the flowmater chambered mufflers are OK if you use them with a resonator.

The in house napa truck mufflers aren't too bad either I've used them in the past.

The Raptor Turbo muffler($25) sounds good, throaty but no drone on the highway.  It is made of thin steel, but they seem to hold up alright.  The one on my '90 has been on it for 9yrs now, and my '91 has 6yrs on it, but I doubt you would get more than 1-2yrs out of one if you live in an area where salt is used on the roads.

Ok, I'll look at all the options over and go from there. Thanks for all the help. If anyone has any other muffler setups I'd like to hear about them to.

Flowmasters and turbo mufflers are great sounding mufflers. You should give it a try. I used have them on some of my old cars. I used to have a stock exhaust setup with an exhaust cutout on my 3.0l truck. Sounds very mean and loud but has a ugly tone to it. My current exhaust setup now on my truck is a (glasspack shaped) walker resonator not a muffler, from an old skool v8 cars. Its a stock type system, sounds stock but with some extra grumble. Many mistaken it for a glasspack! :burnout:

Yep, I had cherry bombs for a very small amount of time on my 68 GTO. Couldn't hear the stereo but it sounded awesome floored.  :gap:

I like the cherry bomb glasspack I have on it and the how loud it is, but living in a apartment complex and leaving at 4:30 in the morning might eventually cause problems lol. I want something that will sound good but be quite at idle but still sound good under accleration

Then try a flowmaster 40 series this sounds like your ideal muffler 50 & 60 series will be quieter at idle and quieter during acceleration but still same flowmaster sound.

I had a flowmaster 40 on my explorer, then on my ranger, I loved it, even with the v6..... I hated my neighbors, so it didn't matter......

they are quite loud though......

I want the performance muffler, but really don't want the loudness anymore, its cool for a month, then just gets old.....

highflow magnaflow cat-summit glass pack-40 flowmaster-all 2.5" on my 3.0, sounds great in the rpms, hush quiet at idle. my brothers 81' 22r has 2.5" exhaust with just a 40 series, it sounds great, but kinda loud.

I always ran a 4 into 1 header with glasspacks and loved the sound, just a bit too loud.  Am currently running a tri-y header and an 18" magnaflow and it sounds kinda poopy.  Neither setup had a cat and was behind a hybrid 20/22r.

I love cheap and quiet.  Every kid in my town has obnoxiously loud exhausts on 4 and 6 cyls.  I love the fact that when I'm in the woods, I don't hear the drone of the exhaust, just the valves chattering away, and the gravel under my tires.  Glasspacks only sound good on V8's!

I have the stock 20r manifold going into a 2.5" in 3" out flowmaster original 40 just dumped the tail pipe out the side and it sounds pretty good, not loud and obnoxious like some other toys at school.
