caster or camber?
« on: May 29, 2002, 05:44:28 PM »
I was wondering if you could tell me how to fix this problem i have.  I'm not sure if it is caster or camber(think it is camber), but my tires are tilted in at the botton so it sits like thi----\  /   those being the whells looking from the front.  I don't have the money at the moment for an alignment, and i can't figure out how to adust this.  My tie-rod was bent, and i ben it back as best as i could, but i figured that only affected if it was pigeoned toed or not. :unhappy:  :nerv:

He's got an 83 live axle.

On Toyota's live axles, camber is not adjustable from the factory.

I would say that your knuckle bearings are toast??
It is a hard call since this is not possible ???

Something is really messed. Is it the front and rear axle? Does it make noise or get unusually hot when in use ???

 crazy

I have the same problem with my '84 solid axle.
I mentioned it to gearman before I had him do my front
posi, hoping he would look at it, but I think he forgot about it when I took it in, so did I.
On the phone, he said it might the the 'trunion bearings'.
Tires are wearing sooner on the outside.
Other possibility is a bent housing, but I don't know how
to check for that.  I don't wheel that hard, so that seems
unlikely in my case.

Damn it >:(I'm pissed. I was hoping it would be easier.  My buddy down at Better Offroad Accessories said that it couldn't be adjusted too. He said that he thought my axle was an 85 because it has the reinforcement welded under the lengthier side of the ale.  It's an 83 truck.  My tires are wearing on the outside too.  I do some heavy wheeling, but i find it hard to believe i might have bent the axle .  Knuckle bearings aren't that expensive though, right.  I didn't change them when i put my loccker in.I was thinking maybe some shims or something might work. ???

if the brace under your front axle extends out to the spring perches and knuckles, then you've got an 84-85 front axle. maybe someone swapped it in you lucky dawg-

if your housing was so noticeably bent, then you would have serious problems driving around town or in 4WD. Your toe would have excessive toe out and your truck would wonder about the road and be harder to control. it would also have less turn in during cornering. in 4WD, it would be hard to unlock your hubs when you were putting it back to 2WD because your inner axles would be in a bind. Also, it would kind of feel as if the front end didnt want to go and the rear was really pushing it.

so for now lets ignore the possibility of a bent housing and focus on your knuckles.

you need to remove one side and inspect the ball joint of your housing and the inside top and bottom of your knuckle itself. look for abnormal wear or stress lines/marks. Before you remove your knuckle, jack the wheel up off the ground and try to wiggle the wheel vertically like pull the top of the wheel from /- to \- so side play movement. we want to find out of your knuckles are all screwed up.

Regards,
BigMike

Allright, i'll try it.  I tried wiggling them that way a few weeks ago, but it didn't do anything.  Oh, well, i'll try again :-/

Well.. :headshake:I haven't had time to pull it apart, but i will this week.  I just got out of school.  I can say though, that there is gear oil slowly leaking from the -i don't know what it is called, but it is the rectangular piece with 4 bolts under the knuckle-, and there are gear oil seapage marks at the hub.  I torqued everything down when i installed.  I even tried to tighten them some more when i saw the leakage. :-/The only thing i can think of would be that the stock Aisin metal gaskets between the rectangular piece and the knuckle should use some sealant after being disturbed for the first time.  I did find a tie rod though.
