Tacoma Cab on 85 Frame
« on: Feb 22, 2013, 02:43:06 AM »
Mods: If there is a better forum for this, please move it. I am hoping it will get some traffic here.

I have the opportunity to pick up a complete 2001-2004 Tacoma extended cab/front clip and frame for free.

Has anyone fit a Tacoma cab onto these older frames? Mine is a reg cab 85 frame. I do not currently have access to my truck or the Tacoma to check it out, but I am fairly certain the cabs are pretty darn close in width. I also remember hearing that the older frames are significantly stronger than the Tacoma frames.

So, would I be better off swapping the Tacoma cab onto my current frame? Or mod/beef up the Tacoma frame?

Any links out there for swapping a Tacoma cab onto the older frames? I am having a hard time finding info.

I plan on a cab w/ custom bed,  120-ish wheelbase, leaf front, coil rear, and a 5.3 swap. I am just not sure which frame/cab combo would be a better starting point.

Thanks.

I've heard of this being done.  And the big things are the body mounts, and the fact that the frame has a VIN and depending on how picky your DMV is, that might be a issue.  But 90% of the time most places only look at the VIN in the door and the dash plates.

As long as you have title to both should be no DMV issues, and as to doing the swap anything is possible, my old next door neighbor swapped a Willys/Jeep pickup onto a K-5 frame.
