Tacoma Frame Recall??
« on: Nov 28, 2010, 09:48:16 PM »
I really want a 2001-04 Tacoma double cab 4x4 for the wife and browse ebay often.  I just stumbled upon this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2003-Toyota-Tacoma-DBL-Cab-4X4-SR5-TRD-/280595415928?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4154ca4378 (basically exactly what we want), but in the details section at the bottom it mentions that the frame and the leaf springs were installed by Toyota as a part of a recall.  What :yikes: Is that for real?

if it got a part that was replaced due to a recall, it is all good to go......

There was an issue with some Tacomas leaving the factory with a lack of rustproofing or something to that effect. A lot of them in the east coast were rotting out really fast, so they did a recall on a bunch. I thought they crushed them but apparently they did replace the frames.

wow...learned something today.  Very interesting that they would put effort into swapping the whole frame.

shoot, my 85 4runner frame rusted out way back and spent its life in northern indiana...wheres my recall?

The frame design has always been terrible when it comes to rust in my opinion.  They rust from the inside out cause they are always wet inside and salt just sits in there from the winter months.

Actually, there's 2 different recalls.  The 95-00 trucks that they deem bad enough get bought back by Toyota.  The 01-04 trucks that are deemed bad enough have the frame replaced.  "Bad enough" is perforation....aka, holes rusted through the frame.  Surface rust doesn't count....gotta have holes in it.  FYI....on the buybacks, they pay 1.5 times KBB retail value in excellent condition.  That would have made my truck worth around $16k.  I totally would have let it go for that!  :D   But yes, the buybacks ARE crushed.

I plan to keep the Tacoma we get for a long time and I also know we plan on moving back to the upper midwest. So, this now makes me a little hesitant to buy one in CA then take back and have it rust out.  Unless of course the recall would still apply then...which I doubt.  Anyone have any good links on the recall details?
