Will my transfer cases survive with 47 inch tires???
« on: Apr 05, 2012, 03:21:29 PM »
Rebuilt 3rz motor
Rebuilt w56 trans
21 spline 2.28 crawl box
21 spline 2.28 crawl box
21 spline 2.28 main case

I am currently building a dana 70 rear axle with 7.17s and a front dana 60 that will run a dana 70 7.17 ring and pinion,
I chose the low gears to help "alleviate" the pressure on my ouputs and such in my cases...

I want to run 47 inch LTBs

So opinions..? I know I need to upgrade my outputs even with the 7.17s making life a little easier.. Can they survive 21 spline?
Should everything be upgraded to 23 spline?

23spline is the input from the trany, you need to upgrade the output to 30 spine.

triple 2.28s is the same options as duals with 4.7s

2.28 vs 2.28
4.7 vs 5.19
10.7 vs 11.85

And I think triples are different (or less common at least), and I have always wanted to run 47s so why not? They gonne kick ass in snow

Ya Taco Runner read what I put down...

I know i need to upgrade my main case ouputs (30 spline Marlin would be preferable), the output
from the trans (its a W56) is 21 spline but i could change everything else including the adapters to
23 spline

yes 83crawler12 I know this my friend...

I know my options on upgrades and what I can and cannot do...

I am looking for opinions? People who have run or seen 44 plus size tires
run with toyota cases and what all they broke, what upgrades they did, etc...

If i was rich I would buy an Atlas or Stak but I really love toyota cases and would
like to figure out a way to build them to last with the 47s... Maybe impossible to do

Huh? I still got it sitting on 42s and toy axles so its useable right now!

Just building the dana 60/70 combo on the side in preperation for the
47s, and ya for sure I will be going full hydro!! The 47 ltb's are 160 pounds a tire
WHICH IS A :pokinit: LOAD it concerns me more than the height

with 7.17s your cases will survive much much much better. Do it, Lots of people around here run retarded big tires (44-54) with stock toyota cases and have minimal issues. Ive got a v8 and auto with stock dual cases on 1tons with 5.13's and 44's ( used to run 39.5 boggers with them) and no issues

:smokin: SWEET! Thats what I am looking for, people who have run 44s plus and have experienced
either CARNAGE or had the cases last...

Ya I gonna try it and see how it works out! 7.17s and 150hp is what I hope helps too..

Thanks IronClad

I have been running 42' TSL's and they are freakin heavy. They weigh in at 107LBS and I ran them for two years in our local mud bogs and top truck challenges. Other than a bent front housing(my fault ran with bent springs and no up travel) I managed to twist the splines on one 27 spline long. That's it, I have around 250Hp with 16lbs of boost. I have marlin 23 spline duels, turbo trans and a Bobby Long output in the rear case. I have 4:88 gears and it's worth mentioning that I am NOT light on the skinny pedal. I am considering the same 60/70 combo with 7.17 gears as well but with 46' claws. They will work WAAY better then the LTB's in the snow and ride down the road better. I think the cases will be fine. I would go for the Bobby Long output and a marlin front output though.
1986 4Runner turbo sas high pinion,E-locked 4:88's,taco rear Detroit locker,22ret forged everything,
duels mc07-r10 cut 42's.

I currently run 42 Iroks and 21 spline triples with no issues.... Gonne do some case upgrades before I get the 47s!

As for the Claws they are great street tire! My rig is a trailer rig and sees zero street ever... The 47 LTB is just a better
off road tire, and I believe it does better in the snow than the claw (from what I have seen)

It looks like I am going to give it a go and just build the cases as stronggg as possible....

I have done a lotttt of searching... Trust me...

Thank you though, that was helpfullll!

A guy in Bend, OR runs vortec 4.3, th350, dual 23 spline cases, 60-14 combo 5.38s and 49s...

His build is also on pirate....

If I do 23 spline and the 30 spline ouputs from Marlin I think I will last... We will se...

I think that 4Runner is sick... So he runs 4.7 gears in both the crawl
box and the main case???

And ya that 30 spline stuff from Marlin appears to be worth the money!

I have contemplated swapping my main case for a dana 300 (front digs are cool),
but cheaper and easier to beef up with those 30 spline outputs...
